The Bristol, UK band IDLES have been on our radar for sometime now. We've been big fans, we've fallen off as fans, but ultimately - we're always going to check out what they're doing.

They made their mark as a rageful, angry punk band who yells about political and social issues. BUT, they've clearly been trying to move away from that trope ever since they received criticism for having a savior complex on their record "Ultra Mono," which was more of an eye-roller than a head banger.

"TANGK" sees them going in a (sort of) completely different direction, subbing in yelling about economic and political state of the union (shoutout Jaden Smith) and explosive production to singing about love over top of lush pianos and shimmery synths. It sounds amazing thanks to Nigel Godrich and Kenny Beats, but the slower cuts could have used some giddy-up, making it more of "headphones" record than one you'd want to blast in your car or see get represented at a live show.

The Official IQMB rating system:
1-3/10 = dog shit
4-6/10 = yeah, whatever
7-10/10 = hell yeah

IMQB SCORE 6.6/10 (strong yeah, whatever)

as in, "do you wanna listen to the new IDLES record?
Yeah! Whatever."

I was a little let down by the lack of hard edge. Still listening tho. Didn't hate it. But I was hoping for something as cohesive as crawler. Thankfully picked up Rat Wars by Health as well.

I love where Idles seem to be going..! Slow and somber Idles is fantastic IMO.. Monolyth is probably my early favorite

I was actually surprised how much I enjoyed the album, given that I was not super convinced by the singles. Already looking forward to the next album, tho, I feel like they're working up to something truly great! Did you guys check out the debut album "Effigy" by Talk Show? Released on the same day and damn that thing is a banger! Would love to hear your opinion on it :)

When I heard this album, I pissed in the kitchen sink. 😢

Ironically enough, the whole idea behind the lyrics of "Mr. Motivator" was Joe Talbot trying to parody themselves in a sense. Like lets turn up all these metaphors certain people mock us for up to 11, and to see "how you like them clichés". And I think that's Idles' very dry and blunt humour at its best

It’s a good 5 th album .. it’s keeping us all alive here. Thank you for sharing your story about it. It’s all about man love I adore it.

Btw, if you’re talking album openers, Heal is and should always be the tone setter for Idles

21:59, the reason A Gospel is at that point in the track listing is because its the last track on side A, works well on Vinyl, closes out the side, then Dancer is track one on the B side

I liked IDLES fine for a while but something about this album really got my goose. Gift Horse, Dancer, Roy and Hall and Oates are firmly in the rotation for me. Great review boys!
