After years of trying to get his rap career off the ground, Joseph Foreman (aka Afroman) struck gold with a cautionary tale about the consequences of excessive weed smoking. “Because I Got High” began gaining traction throughout the South but once it made its way onto Napster and the Howard Stern show, it became an unlikely mainstream hit. Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes starred in the iconic music video and featured the track in their film “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back”, and the song eventually became a #1 hit in 11 countries. VICE meets Afroman to retell the story of his perennial stoner anthem and speak to Kevin Smith about his experience being a part of taking the song sky high.

"People say you're a one hit wonder but how many hits do you need?" best quote!
  • His new single “ Will you help me repair my door” is another certified classic 🔥🔥
  • Can anyone not be happy seeing this guy live his best life? Congrats Afroman, looks like you've cracked it.
  • He seems like the fun uncle who lets you smoke with him, but also gives you solid life advice
  • This is the documentary that no one asked for, but we all needed. Thank you, Vice.
  • I think the best part of the song is the fact that you can hear the smile in his voice, and it's incredibly contagious

This documentary gave me such new found and utmost respect for Afroman. He is a true artist and cutting his ties to the universal label was one of those pivotal moments that solidified it for him, what he wanted out of this music venture.
  • @kashrex
He used no samples, he's the sole writer so all publishing money and royalties goes to him, and it's a worldwide hit. Salute.
  • I saw this dude live and it was incredible. He rolled up in a white cadillac, jumped on stage with a double-neck pot leaf guitar, and proceeded to tear the place down for two hours. He packed up his guitar and walked straight off stage and back into his cadillac.
  • Afroman was one of the best live shows i have ever seen. and it was just him a guitar and an ipod. this guys is a legend
  • I had the pleasure of meeting Joseph. Very down to earth, let me hit the blunt and signed my guitar. What more could I ask from an amazing artist who loves his fans?

If you played "because I got high" or "colt 45" at any house party in the early 2000s the entire crowd would go wild, that's how you know you are involved in something special. It doesn't matter if afroman has only 2 songs that people really know of, it's about what he represents just as much as the music, the time, the era, the weed, the nostalgia. I'm happy he's still alive and doing well in 2022. It's a tough world out there especially these days. Stay safe guys
  • Afroman is definitely one of the coolest gentlemen out there and this song emulates & encapsulates his vibe perfectly <3
  • To say this song is far reaching is an understatement. I live in a small town in Africa and I was listening to Afroman when I was in high-school. Still a huge part of my history.
  • @nitrous36
I always liked the song. And I'm not a weed smoker, never smoked weed lol. But it's still relatable because it's about getting nothing done because of procrastination or being distracted by something you would much rather be doing. Sometimes the best lessons are wrapped in jokes.

Any fan of this man will say he is not a one hit wonder. Maybe one radio hit, but this man has loads of hits.
  • i love how this guy doesn't try to gas himself up. He's just a happy/cool guy that didn't/doesn't make excuses. Humble and strong.
  • Damn almost felt sorry until he said😂I live happily ever after and laughed I'm like man this man is happy. Came from nothin, has like 5 cars a nice home and still gets high damn. Legend
