Strength for the Journey - Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermon

Published 2024-08-10
Friends, we’re continuing our reading of the sixth chapter of the Gospel of John, which is all about the Eucharist. And here’s my take on our reading for today: A long trip by car or plane can be uncomfortable, even overwhelming. But we’re heading somewhere else; we’re on a journey. And on a long journey, you have to find sustenance to keep going.

Mass Readings
Reading 1 — 1 Kgs 19:4-8
Psalm — Ps 34:2-3, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9
Reading 2 — Eph 4:30—5:2
Gospel — Jn 6:41-51

  • Hey friends, I hope this message reaches a few of you all. I’m currently living in a Protestant household and I have come to realize the validity and richness of the Catholic faith. I want to join through RCIA and begin the confirmation process, but my parents are quite opposed to such. I will start going to daily Mass soon, just to be in the presence of our Lord more fully. If I may, I ask for your prayers for me. Thank you all.

God bless you Bishop. Your sermons are so encouraging. I am 81 years old. Don't watch the news. Last night I felt I should watch the news, and after I watched, I regretted watching. Why did I do that. My children and grandchildren are my joy. Going to mass and receiving the eucharist ,adoration, lunch with friends a few times a month is wonderful. But everything else is a ride long distance in a car, airplane, or a motel. Your sermon was wonderful.🙏🙏🙏
  • When Covid arrived, we suffered lockdown, lost our jobs, taking care of 91-year Diabetic Dementia Mum, dwindling savings; how many thousand times have I asked the LORD, "When will this end?! We can't do it anymore, LORD! YOU are not listening. It's falling on deaf ears." Truly, attending daily Mass has helped us endure this ongoing earthly purgatory! Thank you for this encouragement. We needed to hear it, Your Excellency. LOL, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

For college graduation, I was given a trip to Europe. From JFK we took a small Portuguese plane. I sat in the last seat which was a bench like the back of an old bus. A European man with his suit jacket over his shoulders, sits next to me, smiles and orders a bottle of champagne. I naively thought the flight might have an unexpected perk. The continental mister drank the entire bottle by himself from New York to Portugal without so much as a nod in my direction. From then on the Lord was my travelling companion of choice.
  • Bishop Barron, Whenever I listen to your sermons, it seems that God himself is speaking through you. What are wonderful explanation! I am really fortunate to be able to listen to you. Thank you!
  • Those who hate their lives will keep it for life eternal. I love my life because Jesus in it. I love God's creation, nature, skies, stars, and the moon. Without the eucrist I feel that something is missing in me. And nope, before I was baptized Catholic, I did not enjoy travelling, five stars hotels or the five stars food. There was something missing. It's as if the area of enjoyment in my brain was blocked, obliterated, but the presence of Jesus activated it. Only thanking Jesus for what he gave me, the Catholic faith, for the children I have, and for his glorious creation around me, I can enjoy.

I use to dread travel until I was given the grace to realize everyone is working to help and serve me to reach my destination. This attitude of gratitude realizing how the world is working together to bless us.
  • I could listen to Bishop Baron all day and still want for more inspiring homilies. Truly the Holy Spirit is with you. Thank you.
  • I'm meant even now to eat the bread that prepares me for eternal life and it gives me strength for the journey. - BISHOP BARRON, (19th Sunday of the Year) 13: 06 - 13: 17

The journey of life is tough. We often get stuck in bad hotels, have flights cancelled, and traffic jams. Thank you bishop for the reminder that we need the Eucharist, to sustain us on our journey heavenward!

Loved this homily padre Barron. Haven’t done this much laughing through a homily before. Trips and the stories we have from traveling are always hilarious. In the moment torture, chaos and danger, later, crying from laughing. May we laugh through life until we get there. May we be always prepared for the trip, may we help others along the way always. May we travel with the angels, may God be in our every word, every action, in all our senses. May we feel Him with us. May we bring our family and friends with us to the Eternal Kingdom. May we find Our Heavenly Father waiting with open arms. Thanks for the laughs and smiles. Bless you

My Son is in the Air Force and your travel accounts remind me of when he was stationed in Okinawa, and his family was there with him. We traveled there to see him, his wife and our grandkids. It was a VERY long flight and it was not comfortable at all. But, during the flight, we kept counting down the hours until we would be there with them. And what an awesome time we had with them! Much better than FaceTime! You are so correct, Bishop, that this life is a very bad night in a very bad hotel, and that point is reemphasized every night when I turn on the evening news. Things continue to go from very bad to worse. All I can do at this phase of my life is to look forward to the journey's end while, sustained by the graces obtained through the sacraments of reconciliation and the Eucharist, continuing to do whatever Jesus asks of me along the way. It has been a most difficult journey, but the end will be more than worth it.

Lord only you know the burdens I face as a single mom and Heavenly Father you can change them. Father God I’m in need of your guidance and support. Both of my sons are special needs and require so much from me. I’m overwhelmed at times. I need your help providing for my children. Lord I’m constantly struggling each month to pay rent and I struggle to buy groceries, for my sons I’m ashamed. Lord I come to you asking for help dealing with these issues.

I didn’t realize how filthy and weighed down I was until I went to confession for the 1st time in 30yrs, and i didn’t realize how starving I was until i received the Eucharist after. Christ is King
