In this unit, students are introduced to the /OW/ diphthong. They learn how to use the OU vowel team at the beginning or middle of a word to make the /OW/ sound. They notice that words like FOUND and GROUND are the irregular past tense of verbs FIND and GRIND. As they discuss the meaning of each word on their list, students label nouns, verbs, and adjectives. They are introduced to the LY suffix, and use it to change adjectives like LOUD and PROUD into adverbs, LOUDLY and PROUDLY.
