Driver in deadly 2022 crash on Ship Canal Bridge sentenced

Published 2024-04-19
A Seattle man who pled guilty to vehicular homicide and driving under the influence for causing a crash that killed one person on the Ship Canal Bridge in 2022 was sentenced Friday. The crash took the life of Jordan Shelley, a certified EMT who dreamed of becoming a doctor and who was known for his bright spirit and caring nature.

Justin Kuo was sentenced to nine months, including three months in jail and six months of community custody. He will also face 364 days of electronic home monitoring. Shelley's mother spoke on behalf of the family and asked for a lower than normal sentence, citing faith and forgiveness. The judge said he was hesitant at first, but after hearing her remarks and Kuo's message taking responsibility and showing remorse, he agreed.

It is tragic that Jordan's promising future was destroyed in a matter of moments by a distracted driver. I truly hope Justin makes the most of his second chance. Deep respect to Jordan's mom for offering her forgiveness and setting a good example for the rest of us to follow.

How long was he sentenced to jail for? It didn't say? This news cast SUCKS!

THREE MONTHS IN JAIL!!! That's how long he was sentenced to jail. Which (I guess) is fine if the mom gave her blessing. I just wish the news could have mentioned this. They are dumb for leaving it out.

God bless the dear mom...And I pray this young man..can be used to as he says..set a example...never to get behind the wheel..driving. Which many many of us have one time or another..So sad..Sorry to all.
  • People just saying sorry and they don’t get in trouble is why crime is out of control. This man should’ve been made an example of by getting life in prison. The next person won’t goof around when they’re driving distracted.

If he played it differently with a good lawyer, he likely could have gotten no jail time and no record, but I respect that he took responsibility. It’s better for everyone.

  • I commend the family for her kind words to the young man. I pray for both families. I pray that the young man keeps his word to live a life of good. I hope that others learn from this terrible accident.
  • This was a very tragic situation and hard-working young man caught a flat that close to his job. His family is still in my prayers. ❤❤❤❤❤❤

For a DUI like any other vehicular homicide, it's usually "just" a max of 4 years in prison. I don't abide any "lex talionis" except perhaps in extreme cases, but--Justin, if you're listening, you have just been afforded the greatest of human expressions--grace and forgiveness (a divine impartation). Now, you "should" know what to do with your life remaining; GO to Ethiopia on your victim's behalf and serve the people whom the latter was going to serve commemorating the life of his father. Find a way.
