SILENCE - The Power of Quiet in a World Full of Noise by Thich Nhat Hanh

In his book - Silence, Buddhist monk and Nobel Peace Prize nominee Thich Nhat Hanh explains how mindfulness is the practice that stops the noise inside. With gentle anecdotes, simple Buddhist wisdom and practical exercises, he shows us how to live mindfully so that all the internal chatter ceases and we are left with the eloquent sound of silence. Now, at last, we can answer the call of the beauty around us. Through silence, Thich Nhat Hanh reveals, we are free to hear, to see - and just be.

My search for distractions led me to an ironic situation here…

I can't afford books or audio books so I'm happy that I can listen to audio books free on YouTube

Happiness turned to me and said, ‘It is time. It is time to forgive yourself for all of the things you did not become. It is time to exonerate yourself for all the people you couldn’t save, for all the fragile hearts you fumbled with in the dark of your confusion. It is time, child, to accept that you don’t have to be who you were a year ago, that you don’t have to want the same things. Above all else, it is time to believe, with reckless abandon, that you are worthy of me, for I have been waiting for years.’ Bianca Sparacino

Man. A lot of this stuff. He hit it right on the head. I live alone, ain't got much family, and if I'm not at work, or even when I'm at work, my mind always clogged with mostly negative thoughts, from past failures, past trauma, past failed relationships etc. I tend to withdraw from others, get depressed. Play chess on my phone all day to ease it. Or distract it. Or cover it in humor whenever I do decide to talk to peers, friends, co workers. And everyday is a repetitive cycle. And yet I cover it and move on as if everything is OK.

Can we say venerable Thich Nhat Hanh is the greatest teacher of meditation in the modern world.

Excelent material. I started reflecting on, and following these simple habits at age 30. I’m about to be 39 and know I live this way not daily, but all day every day. Sitting in meditation for 30mins daily ONLY to reimerse yourself right back in the drama of the world is not a complete way. To do every thing in life with your full attention and without thought is the way to and for permanent inner peace. Great work of a teaching.
  • I am an avid bird photographer. It requires me to go into quiet places. My thought processes seem to vanish into a tunnel down the lens of my camera. Poetry also helps. Writing it, I mean.

Don’t believe everything you think The only person who is ever responsible for your emotions is you. And your emotions are simply powerful feedback. They show up for one of two dominant reasons You’ll be amazed at what you attract when you start believing in what you deserve. What you tell yourself every day will lift you up or tear you down. Choose wisely Can you feel an intense emotion, like anger, without acting on it, reacting to it, or trying to get rid of it? Can you feel such an intense emotion without needing to justify or explain it—or needing to find someone or something to blame it on?

4:00 “noble silence” no talking while eating, walking 9:00 bodhisatva of deep listening, can utter 5 sounds that can heal the world
  • This is exactly what I didn't know that I've been missing/ needing. Thank God, you and the YouTube algorithm.
  • for 1 week i was not able to distract myself. I did not need all that external stimulation. Life knows what to do and this validates my body telling me to shut up lol ty again for all this wisdom

"I am present." To truly be present, one must have freedom, transcending thoughts, worries, fears, and desires. "I am free" is a profoundly bold statement because the truth is many of us lack freedom. We lack the freedom to listen, to see, and to be present.
