The no 1 reason you dont get promoted: favoritism.

    1. A boss who values you will find a way to promote you. If they dont, or cite HR promotion cycles etc., they dont intend to and like dangling the carrot and exploiting you for your skills and competence. 2. Playing petty politics always seems to work. Corporate offices are toxic cesspools. Straightforward, honest employees rarely move up. 3. Similarly, employees who are very intelligent aren't going to move up either, because leadership prefers subservient, sycophantic mediocrity.

I was passed over for promotion because I became irreplaceable in my role. So, I am now dumping all the work to my potential successor and am making sure my boss knows about it.
  • Sometimes the problem isn't you, it's the boss. Boss's have biases, and one I had was apparently clueless about how bad his were. The worst ones were he only promoted people that were his approximate age, and he only promoted people that had the stereotypical look people associate with success. Are you tall, full head of hair, and slender? Congrats, you've been given the secret promotion nobody else even knew was available. Ten years older, only 6', and male pattern baldness? Well, gee, even though you are LITERALLY DOING THE WORK OF THREE PEOPLE, there's no reason to give you that bump in pay grade even though they hand them out like candy at the other facilities.

there is no secret to this. it's unfair practice based on boss liking and lack of understanding and small vision. thats why no one ever should have one job to rely on. you become a king once the job knows you don't care about it too much.

I find that my biggest flaw is that my personality doesn't fit what they are looking for. Being an introvert is a major downfall when it comes to promotions. Even though I went back and got a graduate degree I have lost out to other employees that were less educated and credentialed. My reviews go something like 5/5 Engineering skills and maybe a 3/5 communication skills. I'll try taking your advice and try working on my conversation skills and hopefully upper MGMT finds me more relatable.

98% of the time all that matters is how you make them "feel". If they like having you around, you will be rewarded, if they don't, you won't - regardless of whether you are the best employee on the payroll.

after 4 years in a company not getting promoted now i understood point 1 and 2 are the ones totally my life
  • @frufrubb45
Told them for 3 years where I want to go again zero nothing, left unpromoted so , again where is the problem ?! All three I did and been overlooked 5x in 5 years !?!?! Other teams are saying I should be higher by now , but my boss doesnt care

    1. Identify your successors. I did all of them have been promoted higher than me. 2. Helping with the bigger picture. Have done that and just get the workload dumped on me. When trying to get involved often times, I'm scolded for trying to help.

Definitely not getting promoted now ! I knew I wasn’t going to be moving up so I just asked to be moved to part time.
  • I'm going to stop right here because red flags go up that you're okay working for a boss who is not doing what they should be doing. If you're ready to move up, a good boss is aware of it and finds the replacement for your silver position so he can get you taking home gold. A bad boss sits in their office, ignoring everything like a god who has lost its passion, waiting to see if you're clever enough to do their job for them, and only letting you past the gates if you should shine three times brighter than they do. Given the opportunity, by the way, please get rid of the piece of clay who stood between you and your destiny. Eesh. And don't listen to somebody who tells you to work for an idiot. There's not much profit in it.

My company gives me great reviews and decent pay rises year after year. But its a small company where i report to one of the directors, so there is no promotion on the horizon unless a position is invented. Having said that, its sad to see that 5 managers have left in 3 years and not a single person has been officially promoted.

Depends on the industry as well. I work in factories. I In manufacturing promotions are very rare, even if there is an opening and you meet the requirements. You generally have to upgrade your skills outside of work and going elsewhere.

The bonus applies to me perfectly. I am tendering my resignation tomorrow for a position at a competitor. I'm irreplaceable and have been promised advancement for years.
  • @Tekkentacles
Hi Ben, I'm resigning in my work and #1 and #3 hits hard. I stayed too long in my job and I want to start fresh in a new organization.
  • I didn't get promoted because I don't follow the Asian "Model Minority " BS and I refuse to kiss anyone's ass.
  • @Rodeo1202
at the end of the day people only care about themselves. Don't expect anyone to help you get promoted at work.
