A compilation of important Barristan Selmy moments from season one of Game of Thrones. Not every scene where Barristan appears is included, since the point was to gather the moments where Barristan is in focus or atleast in a greater role, and scenes which build the character or give insight into him. Some scenes are also cut, to remove the parts which are not directly relevant to Barristan himself.

I love how natural all these conversations feels with Ned Stark, no plots, no evil, just people want to make the world a better place, just the world declining that. He deserved better.
  • Even Tywin later admits this was one of Joffrey's and Cercei's biggest blunders. Dismissing Selmy from his guard, the years of experience and skills lost there, only an idiot would take such an option. Gotta love how Cersei managed to blunder her way through the Kingdom; failing to raise Joffrey properly, failing to understand how to rule, failing to understand anything around her.
  • 5:41 Varys in the earlier seasons is just awesome. Subtly helping Ned and Barristan to understand that the Lannisters plotted Robert's murder.
  • Love how he is subtly telling Joffrey that he now is his enemy. The Iron Throne was made of the swords of Aegon´s enemies. By telling him "Melt it down and add it to the others", he is telling him that they now are enemies. Great scene.

It's a shame the show never touched on Ser Barriston's final act of dedication to his vow as a Kingsguard: Recording his own dismissal in the Book of Brothers before leaving King's Landing for good. Original badass.

"Even now I could cut through the five of you like carving a cake!" The rest of the Kingsguard knew it too :D
  • “You killed Simon Toyne with a counter riposte. Best move I ever saw…” You could always tell that Jamie genuinely respected and maybe even once idolized Ser Barristan.
  • Ser Barristan was “a painter who only used red.”
  • sandor reaching for his sword while the other kingsguard are infront of him and the city watch surrounding him. he knew what a man selmy was and is probably the only knight i like to think the hound truly admires
  • At 7:55 I was expecting Barristan to immediately yell "Treason!" and order the Kingsguard to rally up in defense of Eddard Stark. That would have been so awesome and changed everything for good.
  • I like how everyone is laughing at him until he pulls the sword. Instant quiet. When he said the cake line, everyone in the room knew it was true.

Would've loved to see Barristan cut through the King's Guard and kill Joffrey…

and then he got killed by some boys far away from home in a not important fight. for me, that death was worse than most desicions made in later seasons....
  • The fact Selmy was the only one who stood vigil for the death of a young unknown Knight killed in his first joust... That was beautiful and showed so much character within Barristan.
  • What pisses me off about this show is the fact we never get to see Barristan in battle. Greatest swordsman in all of Westeros my ass. Time for the show to SHOW that part of his character.
  • What really killed the king? Lansel Lannister and his wines. Deadly assassin right there. theres your lesson kids, don't drink and hunt.
  • I wouldn't doubt that Sir Barristan is based off the historical knight, Sir William Marshall: He, like The Bold also served several several kings throughout his life and fought through several wars, killed many men, and died at the age of 72. He was extremely fit for his advanced age and often described in Grandfatherly terms. Sir Barristan himself though, according to Martin could stalemate Sir Arthur Dayne, Sword of the Morning, if he wasn't wielding his trademark blade - Dawn. Even Jaime himself admits at his prime, Barristan is one of the few knights that could beat him in a straight up duel.

I love the reverence that Jaime shows Selmy. A part of him still always feels like a kid, serving with his hero.
  • Everyone was laughing at LF's joke until he pulled out his sword
