I was being followed by muggers once ...I could tell they had targeted me and were following me waiting for the right opportunity. I started to ask people for money basically start begging for change even though I had plenty of money. When the would be attackers saw me begging for money they stopped following me.

I try to walk around with my hood on and hands in my pocket. Who's going to rob someone who looks like they are planning on robbing someone?
  • Intuition Intuition Intuition.......If it doesn't feel right it probably ain't. I grew up in Baltimore and that saved me more than anything. Observe everything in your immediate surroundings.....always.

Not long after I saw this video a few years ago, I was waiting for a friend alone near a NYC restaurant. There was a crowd by the restaurant, but I was off to the side. A shady guy came up to me and started to ask me for directions. I quickly walked away back to the crowd. Thanks, David.

I had a guy ask me to stop once while I was in a sketchy area. Was pretty sure I was going to get mugged. I started twitching/spitting/talking to myself and acting insane and the guy just turned around lol
  • wow really?? thats it for the "advice"?? This guy is a master thief, even behind bars he stole my time.

One of the best tips I've heard is to spend random moments watching people acting normally, just doing day-to-day things, to train your subconscious to pick up on the subtle clues people give off when they're up to something: getting a little too close when asking for the time, taking a furtive look around as they approach you, etc. Then keep your head out of your phone (or at least look up/around every few seconds) and pay attention to your surroundings.

Not proud to admit it, but the one time I was punched multiple times during an attempted robbery, I just screamed like a girl. High-pitch, total emasculation type pitch, but he ran.

As others have said, situational awareness is critical. One day I was about to park in an isolated area of a mall parking lot. I became suspicious of 2 guys sitting in their car and drove away. They sped away as I left. The next day there was a robbery in that lot. This experience bothers me over 20 years later.
  • I haven't even thought about being mugged for so long. It's crazy to me how some mfers feel like they can do that to someone for their own ends. It makes me so angry.

i like to keep a fake wallet with a carefully placed moth inside it so when i pull it out and open it, a moth flies out of it like a cartoon

Sooo... don't stop when someone asks you for the time, carry mace in your hands at all times, don't stand in your own driveway, and be extra paranoid on Fridays. GREAT TIPS!
  • I have lived in the most dangerous cities and never been mugged because I am paranoid. People think paranoia is a bad quality, but it has saved me many, many, many times

Many years ago I was in San Francisco with my bags of tourist Shopping. I saw this big guy coming towards me. I looked at him like I was this tough 55kg, 21 year old. He just backed off and then I realised a police car was at that very time driving up the street in line with me. Thanks to the police it saved me getting mugged. Right place. Right time
