Stage Fright - Nails in the Coffin

Published 2024-02-09
- I evaluate a victim’s response to a life-threatening situation based on a rating system I've coined as "Nails in the Coffin." When someone is killed on-screen, their actions and decisions determine the number of "Nails" they receive. If they exhibit tremendous resilience and make judicious choices, they can earn a commendable Four Nails in the Coffin. However, if they make inexplicable blunders or engage in imprudent actions, such as freezing in place or opting to run upstairs instead of seeking safety outside, I find it appropriate to assign just One Nail in the Coffin.
If the victim stood no chance of survival no matter what they could have done, I could give them 2 Nails in the Coffin.

With Great Kills, There Must Also Come...Great Nails!

  • This film is so much fun, but many of the characters do give up the ghost pretty easy! Ferrari in particular has a way too civilized approach to the notion of survival, believing he could buy his way out. Had you given him half a nail, I wouldn't have quibbled, because I always found his response ridiculous. As I've pointed out before, I love the contract between Giovanni Lombardo Radice's character in this and Cannibal Ferox. The two performances are so radically different I feel he proved himself a great actor. Glad Brett got a pass since there's very little context to what happened to him exactly beyond that he was sent down the proverbial cattle chute. It's a great set up, though, with a grotesque and sinister payoff. I'm having so much fun with these Italian gems! Excellent work!
  • The plot of this film is very close to the more rarely seen British horror film The Flesh and Blood Show (1972), about a group of young actors rehearsing in an old closed seaside theater and also getting knocked off one by one.
