Brian and Karin Trautman have been living on a sailboat for 10 years, and their boat is set up so they can be off the grid in remote places for months at a time with solar and wind power providing electricity, a water maker that turns salt water into fresh water, multiple freezers and loads of storage space for food, and even a small washing machine on board!

They've sailed SV Delos – a 53' sloop rig ketch – 83,000 nautical miles which is the equivalent of circling the earth at the equator more than 3 times. Their latest adventures include sailing as a family with their 6-month baby, Sierra, and outfitting the boat with a heater so they can explore the Arctic this summer after several years in the Tropics.

If you want to follow SV Delos, and support their amazing vlog-style documentary project about the liveaboard lifestyle, we've included links to all their pages here:

Wow! As a sailor and ship captain myself I seriously admire the adventure and challenge you two are experiencing. Stay safe :)

Best pickup line. “Hey wanna go sailing?”
  • She: "We have a toaster which is a bit of a luxury" Me: I don't have a Sailboat...

I really liked how they not only showed the amazing and beautiful parts about living life on the boat but also some terrifying incidents and experiences that one should expect in case they want to live like this. All the best to this family and hope they thrive out there :)
  • I truly admire you guys. 3 years ago I moved to the Canary islands and I live in a cottage in a canyon that my girl owns. I lived in the USA for 55 years and was q total materialist. I live a very minimalistic life now and totally love it. I've learned so much about life doing this. We don't need 1000.00 boots to be happy.

10 years on the sea,one day on the land. Thats the price of being The Flying Dutchman captain.
  • This is ABSOLUTE HEAVEN! and the best part is, if you don’t like your neighbors you can just simply sail away 😃
  • I wonder how people like this meet. With a crazy idea like this, staying together for 10 years, it’s a blessing to have someone who can accept to live like this. Wow.

I am speechless! Unusual for me. My ancestor was born in Antwerp. A seaman then a captain in the US during the wars with England shipping arms and ammunition's. Your relationship together is amazing. I see life in your eyes. The inspiration is overwhelming. You give a tear to an old man's eyes. Thank you young ones. My prayers are with you! 🥰

It's amazing how self supporting you are in every way and every single spot on your vessel that's beeing used. Really admire people who choose there own path in life and who can break free from the beaten track. Have a safe and happy journey 👍

Man. Imagine having a partner who has and will support the same passion you have. They really look happy and content with their life. I love that. I wish nothing but the best for them.

Followed these guys some years back and wow have they upgraded Delos. I stopped watching about 5 years ago when their crew of 7 became a crew of 3. The early years were amazing. What an amazing group of people that was. Brady and Josja, Max and Frida and babs. Wishing you guys all the best, could not even imagine cruising with a baby on board.
