Before you whine about the lame audience (which unfortunately more than 50% of the commenters focus on). This was not a metal festival. It was mixed and I think Meshuggah was the only metal band present. There were a bunch of hard core fans up front (including me) who loved the band and knew all the songs, but for me it was not only about listening to the band. I also wanted to see them perform, and so did many of my friends. Banging and moshing is a great way to show appreciation for the band but you miss out a lot on what's happening on stage, and as a musician myself I wanted to study their playing. Behind us were people who didn't know the band and no one can blame them. They were not into metal. I'm sure they were impressed anyway.

The band´s performance is awesome! The festival was a disaster when about 5.000 attendants were expected while about 400 showed up. That's why you see people with orange "staff shirts" in the audience. Many bands canceled. Right before the show Meshuggah had to deal with payment issues with the festival organisation and I think they finally entered the stage without knowing if they were gonna get paid or not. It was however solved in the end.

It was so heavy, no one knew what was happening.
  • @vkuolema79
This is just like when marty mcfly plays "johnny be good" ahead of its time and no one could understand the name of the game
  • @Brian-ui1bq
His vocals sound exactly the same to this day...fucking insane
  • @mikepostdrums
This video is some serious metal history. Thank you for sharing!
  • @Joose
Only one person clapped when he said "Future Breed Machine"......... 😳 different times
  • @ReefahCheef
Little did haake know... drummers would thrive to emulate his style decades later.
  • The first time I saw Meshuggah was completely by accident when they toured with TOOL. That was a show that changed me forever.

I’m gonna cry. Crazy how ahead of their time these guys are. If this is considered heavy by today’s standard I can’t even imagine how the crowd must’ve felt

The sound quality for this type of band in a video from 96 is super incredible.
  • @Noxious922
The audience simply had no idea what was about to take place.... Afterwards... They still had no idea...
  • @kasogamer
Fun fact: This is only 26 years after Black Sabbath's debut
  • @apedap
I love how Mårten just walks up to the sound booth 😂
  • I absolutely adore this era of the band. And yeah, this right here is music history. Man, just listen to how good they sound! it is insane.

Honestly, this set is amazing. People at the show, 25 years later, probably still have no idea how big of an influence this group would have on modern metal. They're truly ahead of their time.

Listen: I give the crowd mercy here. If you read the influences of this band from their Destroy Erase Improve album, they list Earth Wind and Fire as the FIRST one, then the obvious Metallica/Slayer/ etc, Primus, then they list movies of that day too. No one in 96 was going to see this band coming, or growing to be as popular as they are now. This is indeed INCREDIBLE history, solid sound, and honestly a typical performance for Meshugah. These men do not disappoint, no matter which era.
  • @3:25 Some guitarists point to their guitar and do the thumbs up motion, Marten takes a walk all the to the back of the crowd in the middle of a song to have a conversation with the sound person at the sound booth; when Meshuggah goes, they go all in.
  • lol the crowd back then didnt know how to headbang to Meshuggah's ''4/4''

90s Meshuggah was so fucking good. Jazzy, proggy, brutal and raw. No matter how many years I listen to this band, they never stop to amaze me. Right from the start, they have occupied a league so far beyond their contemporaries, it's absolute madness.
