The potential is there. But it gets squandered by the fact that the moment you open the appstores, it's already trying to sell you 100 different versions of Clash of Clans, Candy Crush, and gacha games, devolving it all into "what palette do I want" rather than "which of these are actually good".

My first reaction to the title: "No. Never." Me after realizing how many console emulators I have and use on my phone: "Hold on, he's got a point"

Disappointed to see nobody mention how influential Minecraft: Pocket Edition was in mobile gaming, especially when Microsoft standardised Minecraft to Bedrock edition using the code-base of Pocket Edition and enabled cross-play between console, mobile and PC, something that was unheard of back then.

The worst problem is how buried any good mobile games are under the avalanche of time-wasters and Skinner box games.

I've been saying for years that mobile gaming has so much potential, unfortunately the monopoly that both google and apple have on app stores makes it impossible to achieve this full potential. What we need is a mobile gaming system like steam on desktop, where games can be rated properly, sold and monetized properly and so on...
