"Passive" is a song by the alternative rock group A Perfect Circle. The song is a remake of the song "Vacant" by the now-defunct band Tapeworm.

"Vacant" was first performed by A Perfect Circle without Trent Reznor's agreement.

The song is used in the film Constantine and the music video uses imagery from the film: Angela Dodson (Rachel Weisz's character) entering hell.

Lyrics:

Dead as dead can be
My doctor tells me
But I just can't believe him
Ever the optimistic one
I'm sure of your ability
To become my perfect enemy

Wake up and face me
Don't play dead 'cause maybe
Someday I will walk away and say
You disappoint me
Maybe you're better off this way

Leaning over you here
Cold and catatonic
I catch a brief reflection
Of what you could and might have been
It's your RIGHT and your ability
To become my perfect enemy

Wake up
(Why cant you?)
And face me
(Come on now)
Don't play dead
(Dont play dead)
'Cause maybe
(Because maybe)
Someday
(Someday)
I will walk away and say
You disappoint me
Maybe you're better off this way

Maybe you're better off this way (×4)
You're better off this (×2)
Maybe you're better off...

Wake up
(Why can't you?)
And face me
(Come on now)
Don't play dead
(Dont play dead)
'Cause maybe
(Because maybe)
Someday
(Someday)
I will walk away and say
You fucking disappoint me
Maybe you're better off this way!

Go ahead and play dead
(GO!)
I know that you can hear this
(GO!)
Go ahead and play dead
(GO!)

Why can't you turn and face me?
(WAKE UP!)
Why can't you turn against me?
(WAKE UP!)
Why can't you turn against me?
(WAKE UP!)
Why can't you turn against me?
(GO!)
You fucking disappoint me

Passive-aggressive bullshit... (×12)

  • I can either be in calm silence, anger, happiness, or tears, this song has been incorporated in so many different parts of my life all these years. You know it's a powerful song if it can change meanings to help you though. Such an amazing song, I will never be tired of.
  • This song helped get me through a rough divorce and a difficult death. Thank you Maynard.
  • How can one be so good at vocal harmonies and just carry so much energy, emotion and charisma in his voice

Constatine is awesome movie. Always makes me interesting movie everytime when this movie is shown on TV.
  • When I was about 14-15 I heard this song and it instantly reminded me of my father who I have a terrible relationship with. Still to this day this song is a powerhouse. I will always love APC!

For some reason everytime I go to a Demon-infested bar this song is playing
  • I am amazed at how he took all those emotions and turned them into songs... If handled correctly, tragic childhoods can be transmuted into soul-nourishing music instead of festering as repressed emotions and bursting out in a destructive manner. This is exactly why I'm glad I am not a machine. No way a machine could ever understand music the way a human being does.

Straight up the anthem of my former marriage. This song came out the year my ex started >really< acting up after having our first (and as I saw fit, only) child. After nearly two decades of mental and emotional abuse (culminating in my daughter self-harming and planning her “self-deletion” at 13 years old) I took matters into my own hands and escaped with my child. Spent every penny I had fighting off the vindictive custody suit that woman filed after she realized my child wanted nothing to do with her. The only reason I came out on top is because my ex was so uncooperative, so horrible, even her own lawyer only lasted two weeks. During the final moments of the hearing after she was forced to drop the suit, the lyrics of this song, which I hadn’t heard in a decade, rang out in my mind like a gunshot in an enclosed room… “Someday I will walk away and say, you f-ing disappoint me, maybe you’re better off this way…” We did it. After 19 years of pain and suffering, my daughter and I are now happy and healing. PSA to men, don’t let the system beat you down, fight to the last. Even when the odds are rigged and insurmountable, FIGHT HARDER. There is no defeat as long as you draw breath.
  • Constantine has what movies of today totally miss- that underlying tension between the male and female lead that’s just left as a tension. The whole movie’s pretty coherent and builds on a limited number of characters very well. Sad they didn’t do sequels

Just a heads up to the commenters that seem to be unaware. This song is about Maynard's mother, who treated him rather poorly in childhood and justified it using religion. She later fell into a coma for decades. The song is about how he craves to argue and reconcile with his mother, but because of the coma, she is his perfect enemy, because she is still alive, yet he has no way to ever get closure. That is where the chorus comes from "Wake up and face me, don't play dead, cause maybe, someday I will walk away and say, you disappoint me, maybe you're better off this way." It is an infinitely more powerful song with the context. It really changed the way I view it.
