In this video I will provide you with a simple and easy method that can be used to measure the height of a stairway guardrail. However, it will be up to you to check with your local building authorities to verify the overall height measurement, just in case it's different.

The code information I'm referring to can be found on page 283 of the 2018 International Building Code Book.

Great instruction. Thank you for the time and effort you took to make this video and share it with us. Greetings from Croatia.
  • Great clear video using the graphics ... do you have a video showing how to calculate number of spindles and how to install them equally spaced? Thanks!
  • I love your videos. I already bought two books of you after watching your videos. And guess what? My first set of stair I did watching your videos and follow your books. Thank you
  • Everywhere I research I find 32 to NO MORE than 38 inches for a Hand Rail . What Country is the 4 foot handrail for ??

I can't believe how many commenters on here don't know the difference between GUARDRAIL and HANDRAIL.

This video is a really good video. Very helpful. Thank you
  • Thankfully, the code for my area now allows the guard on stairs to be at handrail height so you don't have to have an obnoxious extra piece on a really nice set of stairs. Also, if you're adding 3/4 inch flooring, uou better account for it at the framing stage, not when you're measuring for the handrail.

2020 IBC code: “Handrails must be installed on both sides of stairs and ramps. They are usually added on either side of stairways, ramps, ramped aisles, and stepped aisles. And, as mentioned, they must have a uniform height between 34-38 inches.” Where are you getting 42” from?? I personally find 37” to be the sweet spot. In New York, if you go over 38 1/8” on the handrail; be prepared to start over.

Where do I get a current code book? Off topic, code says riser height says 7.5 to 7.75 law says 8.25 max. Law supercedes the regs. Correct?

So if my guardrail on a ascending stair must serve as a handrail as well, it cannot exceed 38 inches right ?
  • You mean between 36 and 42 inches anything between those two measurements are acceptable by code
