First off, if the file surface reflects light, the teeth have been laid down from improper use. You demonstrate improper use near the end of your clip. Do not drag the file across the material on the back stroke, lift the teeth off the material during the back stroke. Once a file rusts to any great degree, the edge of the teeth have rusted as well destroying their edge. Acid washing and scrubbing a misused and abused file leaves one with a clean, dull file. Learn proper filing technique and how to use a file card. Then after carding a file, oil it, and for Pete's sake hang it or put it in a makeshift sheath and do not chuck it in a drawer loose with other files. They will ruin their hardened, sharp, brittle edges by contacting each other. Pretty soon you have a chunk of hardened high carbon steel material for making scrapers, a utility knife, a paper weight, or to use as land-fill.

Don't you realize that the part of the file that rusts away first is the sharp edge? If a file rusts--it is now blunt. Permanently. Removing the rust does not sharpen it The sharpness is gone forever.

Your title should be how to CLEAN and remove surface rust and dirt from a dirty rusted file, without a file card. Also claiming razor sharp??? You didn't sharpen anything, you just cleaned it. If you clean your file when you're done using them, they could last you a lifetime. Storage of file is just as important . I see guys with drawer of their toolbox loaded with a pile of files, and they wonder why most of them are not sharp anymore. Although it is better than some people I have worked with who clean their files on a spinning wire wheel on bench grinder. Please don't ever touch my files.
  • a new file cost $3. bottle of vinegar $3, backing soda $1.5, plus 3 days and more to mess about. All that to have an used file?

Use a brass brush instead of a toothbrush
  • Haven't you ever heard of a file cleaning brush. That's what they are made for, to get the crud out of the cuts. Thanks for the video.

А может дешевле и быстрее купить новый напильник?
  • Não houve modificação alguma, apenas uma boa limoeza e propaganda do wd
  • This is what a file card is for, not sharpening, but cleaning!
  • 1 - limpe bem a lima com uma escova de aço. 2 - deixe-a por 12 horas imersa no caldo de limão. 3 - lave-a com água e sabão. 4 - enxágue e seque bem. 5 - aplique óleo spray.

Been doing for years. The copper pipe , works great, cleans the lands out better than a file card or a wire brush
  • 👏👏👏👏 Te felicito muy buen trabajo. Quedó como nueva. Saludos desde Buenos Aires 🇦🇷

I could have cleaned, and sharpened it; in less than an hour. With all the work, and time, you spent, it would have been easier to buy a new file!
