Open Bar #101 - The Acolyte Episode 5, House Of The Dragon Roars

Published 2024-06-30
Is The Acolyte actually improving with Episode 5, or is it all just a flash in the pan? And now that House of the Dragon Season 2 is here, can we look forward to a few weeks of truly good TV? Join me, MauLer, Snarky Jay, Robot Head and Despot of Antrim as we try to make sense of it all.

  • Seeing Mauler and the Drinker rip apart the Acolyte is the most satisfying part of the show’s existence.
  • It genuinely annoys me how the Squid Game actor (dunno his actual name) is actually a pretty solid choice to play a Jedi, but he’s just stuck with writing that wouldn’t pass my third grade english course.

The thing with Cortosis is that it's from the EU. You know, the EU that Disney nuked into oblivion and declared non-canon. If you want to introduce that, you have to EARN it. You have to give SOME kind of explanation for what you are seeing. Instead they just clearly ripped it off Wookiepedia and just expected everybody to know what was happening.
  • Star Wars fanfic stories have more respect to the source material than Disney ever did.
  • Finally convinced the wife to cancel Disney+. Even after the “debates” and realizing our country is in the shitter, this cancellation made it a good productive week.
  • 🎶Everybody is Kung Fu fighting! Their kicks weren't as fast as lightning! Nobody has any excellent timing! Ezra Miller discount sighting. Trees and Jedi dying! I'm laughing instead of crying. Cortosis vs lightsabers not igniting! Use of force when there's continuity reminding. *There's plenty of mock material with this song to go with this episode.

Even as an Expanded Universe fan I don’t blame Drinker and others for being confused about cortosis. KennedyFilm and Disney drops old Star Wars lore (which they killed off) with the subtlety of Tetris bricks without ever earning the right to use any of it, and doing it wrong.

Love open bar! Snarky is a delight and I hope to see her again.

Shrek seems so much older than fellowship of the ring
  • I still think that in Disney Star Wars the writers think about the story backwards: they think about the scenes first and then about the story to tie them together after they have a list. Wouldn't it be great to see "horses" racing along the side of a star destroyer? Wouldn't it be wonderful to find the place of an artifact by following a shadow or a silhouette? Wouldn't it be nice to destroy a fleet with a suicide charge from a starship jumping to hyperspace? ....... and this continues with all subsequent shows up to Acolyte. They don't understand that they're not writing for a Wile E. Coyote cartoon.
  • Ezra didn't even need a lightsabre in Ashoka... but these Jedi Knights forgot they can use the Force entirely? ... jeez Disney can't even remember their last show!

They pick and choose when to follow Legends Canon One Episode we are not supposed to follow Master Ki Adi Mundi Birthday because it's Legend Another Episode We are supposed to follow Legends when Cortosis is used as the strangers armor and helmet

Hope SnarkyJay comes back. She's bright and entertaining in addition to being a ridiculously attractive woman.
  • I was just about to tell you that @SnarkyJay would be a great addition to Open Bar and Friday Night Tights!

A little context about cortosis: Originally, it was just lightsaber resistant (see KOTOR 1&2 and Jedi Outcast). The reason for its limited use was its rarity, difficulty to refine, and cost. It was weaved into weapons( like carbon fiber in the real world) like vibroblades to allow users to fight against lightsabers. Again, resistant NOT proof and definitely not an auto disable button for lightsabers.

Seeing Snarky Jay with Drinker, Robot Head and Mauler was not something I’d think I’d ever see happen and yet here we are. Great show!
  • I gotta say, you guys have made my days so entertaining since I’m a stay at home dad with a newborn girl. Thanks for keeping me company gents.
