Today (April 25, 2024) is the 50th anniversary of Portugal's Carnation Revolution that ended the authoritarian regime that had ruled the country for 48 years, and that was kickstarted by a radio transmission of Portugal's 1974 Eurovision entry. Yes, an Eurovision song ended a dictatorship.

That clip from Eurovision just might be the first time I have heard Abba live. Very different from the studio-polished version we usually get.

Today is Björn Ulvaeus birthday today one of the ABBA members.

I always thought that the phrase "Facing/Meeting my Waterloo" was well established in the English speaking world as mening "to face the ultimate hardship in life" or something like that.
  • Fun fact : Napoleon was defeated but will be loved forever, especially in his native France and Belgium, it's the very first case of "Stockholm Syndrome" which is also why Napoleon Losing Waterloo might have been a foretelling that ABBA would win Eurovision as the ABBA won the battle (Arthur, Blücher and the Belle Alliance). as they do sing I was defeated you won the word, Promise to love you forever more. Also it was not designed to win the Eurovision song contest; it was designed however to put Scandipop on the map and Scandipop is the bas of Disco

Really really great, enjoyable video as always. But, seriously? What really pees me off is that, 50 years on, we still have Americans pronouncing the group name as "Arba". Y'know, It's Abba with an A as in Apple. Still love you guys, but get it right :)

Great video! Next time, remember the first syllable of ABBA rhymes with ‘cab’. I can forgive you mangling Agnetha, no one gets that one right, but the Hebrew word for father and the band name are not pronounced the same. ;-)

American pronunciation of ‘ABBA’ is cringe…
  • @idraote
And the fact that Sweden is hosting the ESC on the 50th anniversary of that incredible victory exactly is random chance. Of course.
