The long awaited sequel to Marvel's Spider-Man is here after five years, and now that it has been a few weeks, I figured I'd give my brief thoughts on this game. Is it actually as good as they say? Well, watch and find out!

The opening is right out of a God of war opening. Huge boss to teach you controls.

At the end of the game, when you’re fighting the symbiotes I could’ve sworn that when defeated they sounded like the Chimera from Resistance. Even if it’s coincidental I like to think it’s Insomniac giving a slight nod to one of their franchises.

the storyline in this game was so so good, I was genuinely distraught over peter losing himself to the symbiote. I didnt do any side quests or anything during that section. i made an effort to get through that part of the game as fast as possible because it felt so genuinely wrong for peter to be acting the way he was. I'm also so so glad they brought back Martin Li, he's my favorite spiderman villain by far.

Venom didn’t have enough screen time.I think they might’ve removed a couple of encounters with him because the concept arts and the trailer for Spider-Man 2 made it seem like you were going to have a boss fight in the middle of the streets with cars being thrown everywhere.tony todd even said that we’d have a chase scene similar to rhino’s in miles morales.

I could seriously just websling around the city for hours. This game is so good. The graphics and animation are beautiful, the characters and story are great, and the controls are so smooth.
  • Personally, I couldn't take Venom seriously once the third act kicked in. His whole "heal the world" shtick is tiresome and cliché. Was it so hard to just have the classic Spider-Man vs Venom showdown instead of throwing everything at a wall and seeing what stuck?

Are people really that excited playing mediocre stealth missions with Mary Jane? The A.I is so braindead.

Biggest criticism is that the story just tries to fit in too god damn much, which is typically more of an issue for final/third entries. First game had a very clear "core" with Peter and Otto's relationship that tethered everything else together, but the sequel struggles to find that same grounding. Peter's relationship with Harry vs. Miles, Peter's corruption by the symbiote, Harry becoming resentful towards Peter, Miles' conflicted feelings towards Li, building up Kraven's threat...few of these things ever get the proper time to breath and so their conclusions feel like a half-baked excuse to get to the next plot beat ASAP.
  • Considering this is the third Spider-Man 2 that's been released since I was a kid( 4th if you want to count Game Boy and 5th if you want to count The Amazing Spider-Man 2) I still find it funny that only one of those games let you go to the goddamn Statue of Liberty. get your shit together developers I want to swing around that statue again.

I love this game but it’s ridiculous how there isn’t a new game plus at launch.

quick note on the bugs. I love this game but I've just experienced so many. Suits turning into debug cubes, object clipping/phasing, important NPC character models just not loading in even in cutscenes and then crashing the game when you try to reload your save. Lots of crashes, usually foreshadowed by the visual bugs. the game is otherwise good but they go beyond funny and into game breaking territory. Hope insomniac can patch most of em soon.

I like the game but I don’t think they didn’t do enough to make the open-world unique with meaningful side content. It’s basically the exact same as the first, just faster
  • @JenerikEt
I had the debug cube right as i got anti-venom, which was hilarious because it looked like the symbiote took back over peter and he just disappeared

I had some minor issues with the game, like the side missions all unlock one at time so you have to choose between not upgrading and playing the same mission over and over. But my big complaint is the Kraven storyline really overstayed its welcome. It also didn't convince me that Kraven is not one of the most boring Spider-Man villains. Still everything else I loved. And everything else about the story was great (like Miles and Mister Negative, and the Venom stuff).

Clearly we didnt play the same game. Was the gameplay good. Yes, but not leaps ahead of Sm1. The story and villians of Sm1 are leaps ahead of Sm2.
  • @bluuangel004
Would've been better if the other villain deaths were included in the main story to make Kraven more threatening instead of working in the background.

100% agree. 10/10 game. Also apparently that cube bug wasn't patched because it happened to me today at the very end of my stream when I was buying all the costumes for the last trophy. It was actually hilarious webswinging around and fighting crime that way. Closing the game and restarting fixed it

I blasted through this game in like 4 days, so clearly I don't hate it. It's one of the best games I played this year and it's one of the best pieces of Spider-Man media that exists. But holy crap this game made Starfield look polished. I have my own issues with the pacing and writing of the story, it's still great and a ton of fun but I like the first one better. But my biggest gripe was in the 32 hours it took me to 100% this game, I experienced five hard crashes, five instances of all of the background noise in New York City disappearing, one instance of enemies freezing in place and being totally unresponsive to combat, one instance of a mandatory button prompt not registering and soft locking me out of mission progress, one instance of my character model totally failing to render and instead having me jump and swing around as a little gray cube, random instances of enemies clipping through objects, crimes disappearing right as you approach them, other crimes showing up with no actual criminals to fight or activities to accomplish when you do get to them, Spider-Man constantly quipping about where did these symbiotes come from even though there aren't any there, The game not registering that I am pressing the right trigger and as such not releasing a web for me to swing on, and some really weird texture warping around characters next or the failure for anything other than their head and neck to render It does look like they just dropped a patch yesterday so they're definitely aware of these glitches, but it is surprising to see such a major Sony first party title be released with so many of them But again, all of that being said. Nothing was game breaking, nothing couldn't be resolved by either reloading the last checkpoint or restarting the game after a crash, and as a massive fan of the character and of the original game, this was still an absolute blast to play and I still go home and boot it up just to swing around the city. I am absolutely ecstatic for the addition of New game Plus as well as some other post game features, and then especially the DLC Insomniac is a developer that I am confident in there ability and intention to fix these technical issues, so I'm not going to hold it against the game forever, it just sucks that that's my first impression with it But much like the first one, I will be playing this game over and over again. There are a few other things I think it could have done better or actually does worse than the first game, but on the whole it takes what worked, cleans up a lot of it, and then make certain things way better. It's going to be hard to go back to replay that first game because it's going to feel really slow. Traversal was the best part of the first game, and it's the absolute best part of this one as well. Yes it really does make you feel like Spider-Man... 2
