  • My husband’s grandmother called it blessing the kitchen, or bedroom, or whatever. Cleaning was not a chore but a way to bless your home. I try to look on it that way as much as I can.

One tip I learned from an amazing book called ‘Organic Housekeeping’ is when you’re cleaning using a cloth, fill your sink or a bucket with hot water and add several cleaning cloths. As you use one, don’t rinse it in your clean water, rather set it aside. Take another clean cloth and continue cleaning. It uses less water overall and you’re never getting dirty the water you’re using in your bucket.
  • Emptying the toaster for the birds, that’s very mindful. I need to make a feeder like that. Enjoyed seeing what’s in your cupboards and how you run your kitchen. It’s nice, how you said, you’re” mindful about not hoarding but having just enough.” Loved seeing the different birds 🐦. Thanks for sharing.

Where I come from, a lot of women would put newspapers on top of their kitchen cupboards (and tall wardrobes or other tall pieces of furniture). No one sees them but they are great protection. My mum used to do this and I still do, especially in the kitchen where the dust they collect is harder to scrub (rather than just changing the newspapers when needed) due to the grease and steam caused by cooking.

With bulk spices, if you have to buy in large quantity but don't see yourself using them up in a year, especially with ground spices, Find a friend or neighbor or coworker, someone else who will cut the cost and you can share the spices between you. My friend and I do this quite a lot. We are both low waste sustainables in the area and we just got back from the store and splitting up our haul. She even gave me her recipe for Dill dumplings. Here is the recipe in USA measurements if anyone is interested. Knowledge is free and doesn't weigh a thing. ~ Fluffy Dill Dumplings ~ By my friend Darlene 1 1/2 cups flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 Tablespoon parsley flakes 1 Tablespoon dill weed 2/3 cup milk 1 egg, slightly beaten 2 Tablespoons, oil In medium bowl, combine dry ingredients. Add milk, egg & oil. Stir only until ingredients are moistened. Drop by teaspoonful on top of hot chicken soup. Cover tightly; simmer for 12 - 15 minutes or until dumplings are done underneath. Enjoy! <3 =)
  • I just love how you even shut the doors of your cupboards slowly

A small kitchen is better than larger kitchen in my view. It's size makes you prioritize only what you need. Especially with those old homes, they knew how to accommodate people who only lived by necessities so it's perfect for you. By the way...the expression "higgly piggly" was the cutest thing ive heard! 😄Have a good week dear. ❤🌷🐦🌞

Here is a good tip I learned from my father. Unplug electrical appliances such as the toaster and coffee maker when not in use. Then there is no electrical current running in the appliance. It's been a habit throughout my life and a good lesson from my father that I practice in my own home.

Please know how much your videos are appreciated! I LOVE Fairyland Cottage. So calming. It's like an introvert recharge.

An audible sigh was heard from me when you took your toaster out to spread the crumbs for the birds. That's when I subscribed! You are a blessing to my ancestors' country. Blessed be.
  • so obsessed with ur channel, its so peaceful and everything is done with such love, always a wonderful experiece! xx
  • I think I’m a rare breed... I’m 57 and have never had a dishwasher. As a kid, my brothers and I had our dishwashing duties after dinner each day. I guess I got my training at an early age. Now we just do the dishes right away after each meal...if two people tackle the job, it’s over and done with in a matter of a few minutes. PS - love that term “hobb”... we don’t have that one here in 🇨🇦

I can smell the freshness and cleanliness all the way from New Jersey! Your cottage is so charming. ❤️
  • @elefantzdesigns
Niamh, I don't know if you're reading new comments anymore, but just in case, I wanted you to know that I watch this video every January because it inspires me to deep clean for the New Year, to slow down and do only that which I'm able, and to give thanks for our simple small home and the privilege of caring for it. Thank you, and God bless you and your family in 2024. xx

To have your own home what a lovely respite I myself have an apartment don't have a garden but I wonderful window light that gives me lots of pleasure for growing things in my mind
  • Cleaning looks so calming and fun when you do it! 💚 I'll try to take that feeling into my next cleaning session
  • @katherine5354
Your videos are ones I look forward to every week! Before you posted these videos on cleaning, I was really challenging myself to work on cleaning and decluttering as a form of self care, instead of a task to hurry and rush through. I put on an audio book or music and do each task as if it were an act of care. Your videos have been inspiration and encouragement to continue in this way. Thank you for creating such a positive space.

I love the smell of a deep cleaned room and using essential oils prolongs that scent.
