Is your air conditioner freezing up inside or outside? There are a few reasons why the AC condenser and evaporator coil can freeze over. In this video I go over 8 reasons why an AC system could freeze and explain why it happens and what needs to be done to fix the problem. In short, the causes of an air conditioner freezing can be causes by: a dirty furnace filter, too many close vents or blocked returns, unit low on Freon, thermostat set too low, bad blower motor, bad control board in furnace, restricted metering device, and a plugged evaporator coil.

So many repair YouTube guys beat around the bush for 5 minutes. Not this guy. Just the facts, fast and understandable. Kudos.
  • As an HVAC tech, I appreciate not being called out for a dirty filter and the other simple reasons you have explained. Cheers

11 o'clock at night and I need to get to sleep....just one more YouTube video....just one more......... But I'm learning so much.

A little understanding goes a long way, brilliant summary.
  • @tommygossett
Very concise and to the point, which is exactly what anyone in need of quick and helpful information is looking for. Thank you.
  • this guy really helped a lot of practitioners/technical guys in solving issues that are commonly encountered by normal users of AC regardless of manufacturers or make of the unit....
  • @f-j-Services
2:30 thank you for actually varifying this information, I was not able to verify by searching "short shot ac unit, more room for expansion" and stuff along the lines of that. Nice info too!
  • @ge3466
Thanks, Its Saturday, my air handler is semi frozen up, and my air guy won't be here till Monday. You have given me some peace of mind.
  • This guy is phenomenal! Concise and to the point. Keep up the great work.
  • @kcbody
Thanks so much! I worked on four of your reasons and it appears my AC is back to cooling!!
  • Great/clear video on potential causes, and what to check/work through before having to call A/C Repair (i.e. if refrigerant issue).

Excellent information. Mine turned out to be a fouled (dirty) evap coil. I had to cut a "window" in the side and use a shop vac with a brush extension. Ran to the local HVAC shop and they sheared a piece of scrap to 1" oversized in both directions in the measurement of the "window". They were nice enough to give me some self tapping sheet metal screws. Pre-drilled holes in the cover, used those as a guide to drill the holes in the plenum with the self tappers and dry fit the cover. The next part is going a little overboard, but I drew a line around the new cover (using it as a guide), removed the cover, smeared a little grease on the plenum only from the drawn line, in. Put a bead of silicone 1/4" in of the parameter of the cover, set it to the side for an hour while I poured myself a bourbon and watched some videos on the tube of the yous. Then, reinstalled the cover just enough to slightly compress the silicone bead. This system is only 5 years old so I'm sure I'll be the one removing the cover again. If not, I left instructions on the side of the plenum for the next guy, or gal.

A property I manage just had this problem. Great video for the homeowner to watch. I forwarded the link to them. There's no sense having a technician come out until the system is no longer iced up.
  • @mikefixac
I've gotten a chance to watch a number of your videos since coming across your channel. Please accept my sincerest thanks for all that you've taught me. I love Youtube and it's YTers like you that make this site so fantastic.

Thank you, thank you!! My ac condensor and lines outside are solid white ice, and no AC in the house. I reset the circuit breaker and the ice melted and now have cold air coming out of registers. I will inspect my 18-year old A coil for dirt. My filter was new and I change filters regularly. You were very informative in your video.
  • 👏👏this man us a genius!!. The way u explain everything is way better than anyone else I've listen to!!
  • @lisajon1218
Really right to the point about what issues could be causing the problem I have and I appreciate it very much. Thank you!
