An alternative method for solving the "How do I sit in a bustle?" question! Watch as we try to build this darn silly chair out of wood and metal, and then put it to the test, both with and without the full 1880's bustle dress.

The image you might have seen haunting social media comes from the Scientific American, January 15th, 1887 edition: books.google.com/books?id=E6IzAQAAMAAJ&lpg=PA36&dq…

Woops, apparently I left y'all hanging by not showing how I got in the car. The answer: unclip the bustle, and put it back on in the parking lot when I reached my destination. Inconvenient, I.Baldwin clearly didn't take automobiles into account while designing 😜 (Bonus Fun Fact: The year 1886 is regarded as the birth year of the modern car....same as this bustle-chair.)
  • Everyone: always remember, shoes before corset 😁✨ Morgan Donner: hold my chair bustle. 😎

"How long is your hair?" "Oh, you know, chair length."
  • Scene: 1886 patent office Secretary: "Sir, we have an... interesting submission." Boss: "Let me see it." (they look at the design, then look at each other) Boss: "We can't not patent this." Secretary: "I'll have it through by tomorrow."

Perfect for comicons when there is never enough seats.
  • This would be the sort of thing that, if they had telemarketing back then, would be sold via telemarketing. "Do you have trouble finding a seat when going to church? Do you get tired when waiting in line at the bonnet shop? Do you wish you could find somewhere to rest? Now, you can have a comfortable seat with you at all times with the amazing Bustle-Chair! The Bustle-Chair is the discreet seating solution for all ladies! For only sixpence ninety-nine shillings! Send your letter right now! The first 20 ladies to mail get a second Bustle-Chair for free!"

I love how Mr. Morgan Donner is always like: "You want me to help you make a foam-core dress form of you? Okay." "You want to build a chair to go under a dress? Sure." But also you pinning the top on that dress was clearly magic. I legit paused and rewound the video for that.

  • Imagine wearing this while waiting in line and people being so confused on so many levels

Now whenever I see a Victorian garment with a torn hem I shall wonder if she had been wearing her handy dandy bustle chair and the skirt got caught under the leg.
