I think they got a chance at winning but haven't heard the other songs yet either

Skip Dutch exams, Charlie knows New Kids he passed🎉😂 Thanks for the reaction.
  • The entire song (while sounding happy) actually has a depressive undertone, relating to the fact that people with severe depression might act very happy to put on a mask. Lines like "I lost everything, except for time", "I'm in Germany but I'm so alone, even when I'm in Italy I still feel the pain" underscoring the fact that since the death of his parents he's felt deep pain and lonelyness no matter where he goes. And the bit that says "I'm running from myself, all day long I call for help, I even give people money but there's nobody who really helps me", highlighting his battles with his depressions, PTSD and eating disorder, and that even doctors (the people he pays) can't really help him. So yeah, it's actually a very sad song in a very happy shell. Like Joost himself is very sad but puts up this happy mask for the world. And all this as a hyme to his parents, packed in a song that represents the unification of Europe, and the importance of it, especially now with the big red angry giant from the east lurking over us Western Europeans. It's not a great song, it's a masterpiece.

It's kinda nostalgic to me, DJ Paul Elstak was making songs in the 90's and i remember sitting in the back of our crappy car listening to a mixtape with him on it. It's Europe centric, yet extremely dutch.

This song has a deeper meaning. 'Papa' is translated 'dad' in dutch. Joost lost his dad to cancer when he was 12 and his mom a year later because of a cardiac arrest. When he was younger he watched the Eurovision with his parents and said “I’m gonna sing at Eurovision one day”. Joost sings that no matter where he goes or what he eats, he can not escape the pain of this loss. In the end he says goodbye to the pain of his loss by burning the photo, without losing the memory. This song is also an ode to Europe. His dad told him that it’s a world without borders, because borders are invented by humans. And that you can create your own world. The dance break is gabber music - a music style that was invented in the Netherlands, and the sub genre is called happy hardcore. Bringing a personal loss, the feeling of Europe and the dutch culture together; that is art.
  • I was waiting for this ... lol.... 12 points go to the Netherlands,... 12 Punkte für Europapa, Joost Klein, the winner of Eurovision 2024💪
  • @Baileyske
The unshortened outro goes like: "On a crusade in my jeans, walking through the fields My dad and my mom are forever my heroes At the end of the day, we are all human My father once told me: "It's a world without borders" Rain against the dormer, while I stood at the window crying. Darkness far too early, it is winter in the spring time. “I miss you every day,” is what I secretly whisper See now, Dad? I listened to you"

"My target group is older people watching me learn", ... OLDER PEOPLE..., Man I feel so old now 😭😭😭.

Thanks for reacting to our country. Love your videos. Keep going strong! :)
  • @PrincesAzula
Charlie your heart is part American and the other half is Dutch! We in the kingdom of the Netherlands love you
  • @ikkezegtie
totally agree, i am 'old', not really wanting to see a bunch of unknown artists that you react to. But this is Europapa. Gotta listen to it a few times and a Dutchie (like you by now are) should embrace this. And btw you look a little stressed, i really hope you are doing fine <3 Just remember that we appreciate you! And i love that you seen New kids!
  • @marktegrotenhuis
The subtitles on this video are not auto generated, they are actually written out. Should have had them on from the start.

Thank you for taking this emotional rollercoaster. My recap: You can travel freely in a Europe w/o borders but the pain of the loss of loved ones travels with you. Follow your dreams and make the ones you love proud. Carry the memories with you but also their lessons. Joost is no joke he is a survivor right through the pain to party on the eurovision stage.
  • Love your reaction Charlie and cool to hear that you know New Kids! ❤
  • @sanmama1602
Very special! Don't worry if you don't speak Dutch as we speak all languages anyway. Thanks for your review. Greets from Leeuwarden!

Joost lost his dad when he was 12years old and his mum 1 year later. The song is an ode to his parents, especially his dad - the song is called 'Europapa' -> papa means dad in Dutch and he refers also to a song from the Belgian singer Stromae called papaoutai, which in French means ''dad, where are you?''
