Electric vehicle converter Lunaz is on a mission to breathe new life into old vehicles. Having started with some of the most luxury classic cars such as Rolls Royce, Jaguar and Bentley - it's now adding electric rubbish trucks to its repertoire. We visited the facility in Silverstone to find out if the electric rubbish trucks are getting the same luxury star treatment.

Renovating used commercial vehicles & turning them into EV's is the perfect circular industry. Perfect sense. Way better than actually scrapping, or moving to another less strict country. Reuse recycle amazing stuff!
  • @glenreidy
Real problems with real solutions. I think this is one of the best fully charged episodes.
  • @patrickjr11
Not often that I get impressed with some EV stuff. It's almost routine now. But I am properly impressed with this. Not just the scale and type of the cars involved. But the transfer of tech, knowledge and the ambition of it all. Outstanding stuff

The phrase We send the used trucks to a developing country to just move emissions somewhere else Is to respect the fact a lot of people tend to forget Thank you for the amazing EP and for the hard work
  • @examinerian
Excellent! Repurposing/reusing is much better than recycling back to steel plate ready to push back through the new-build factories. Also, given bin trucks are typically doing 1-2mpg, and operate right where people live, they are exactly the right point to start to make a noticeable difference. Well done! 👍

Lunaz seem to have their business head on! (Apart from “recycling” originally very expensive trucks at apparently a lower price than a new one, the 11 day turn round also sounds a lot more attractive than maybe waiting (a year? Eighteen months? 🤔) for a brand new truck to arrive! 👍👍👍
  • @John-sh7rh
I would really like an in-depth show following one truck though from start to finish! These are the vehicles that need to be changed over for a lot of reasons! Please ask them if you can do a follow-through.

I have been quietly screaming this at the top of my aging lungs. Local jobs, keep the money in circulation, train and reward folks who learn the tech, economies of scale, etc. The UK seems to be ahead of most others. Good on you'all. Now to start doing this here in better ways in the USA ...
  • Magnificent. Don’t we all love an enthusiast. So informative & (surprisingly) incredibly interesting listening to these innovators speaking about their excellent product. James - I have to say you’re my favourite! I’d love to know which councils have signed up, so we can all lobby the rest. There’s hope for us all yet folks.

Thanks for this. I was getting a bit depressed about England not being a manufacturer anymore. We still have a way to go but the next challenge is to convince the Eton-educated toffs who run this country that engineering and manufacturing is these days more important than Imperialism and moving money around the world for no real tangible advantage. Moving a number from one account to another is not adding value, but those people have no idea about real value.
  • Yes I agree filming inside an industrial site is never easy and your crew has made that , for us viewers, simply incredable. Well done Robert and Crew.
  • The most inspirational video I have seen for a long time and has taken my mind completely off the worlds woes. It would be great if Lunaz could open up at the weekends and take tours around their plant. perhaps Fully Charged who seem to be great at this sort of thing could organise a few weekend tours at other significant sites like the National Grid control centre. I really am almost clinically depressed about the state of the world and a trip to lunaz would cheer me (and a lot of friends) up enormously.
  • @trizzybones
Amazing. I hope they can get a similar level of quality in their planned future factories as they scale globally. As an American, I'd love to see them come here. Especially love them making the cabins more comfortable for the operators.
  • @adamlytle2615
I love everything about this. This type of thing is long overdue. All respect to the startups like Arrival that are creating whole new vehicles, but this type of conversion feels like it could have been kicked in to high gear 5 years ago if the incentives had been there. Maybe not for garbage trucks, but certainly for delivery trucks and other medium service vehicles. It might have been a much quicker path to just getting EV vehicles out on the road.
  • @colinpalmer9070
Lumaz for the win ! This is one of the most inspiring shows for a while. We have new electric bin lorries in Dundee but this makes waaaay more sense.
  • @GordonMullan
Absolutely superb! We need lots more companies doing stuff like this 😍
  • @dr-k1667
This is something the UK has developed that they have every right to VERY PROUD of. I hope this idea goes around the worl and that governments everywhere will support efforts like these.
  • @Bowlzee
Super impressed by this. Upcycling existing vehicles, especially commercial vehicles, will be critical. Can't wait for the local authority to change our bin lorries :)
  • @genericuser2339
Love this. Wishing them all the luck with this project. And no one mentioned the reduction in running costs for these behemoths compared to diesel equivalents. Long term makes far more sense for councils to use these.
  • This was absolutely fascinating, Bobby...! As you said at the end, Lunaz have gone from the "sublime to the cor' blimey" - on the one hand, simply exquisite examples of craftsmanship with their bespoke classic car restorations now feeding through that level of expertise to 11 1/2 day conversions of bin lorries...! Just astonishing... Cracking video 👍
