Indie horror games usually fall into one of two camps... either surprisingly spooky, or forgettable trash.

Unfortunately for Darker Skies, not only is it the latter. It also be one of the worst examples I've played.

So let's take a good look at why this War of the Worlds tie-in game is everything wrong with indie horror games!

Thanks for watching the video! Have you played Darker Skies? What's your favourite indie horror game? Let us know! 💚

Doesn't look good. You're better off playing Nightmare of Decay. It's only $5 and is a nice little indie homage to RE, Silent Hill, and Monolith Productions' Blood. And we're going to get a bunch of AAA horror games soon too: Callisto Protocol, Dead Space Remake, and RE4 Remake. I still don't think RE4 needed a remake though. Code Veronica or Dino Crisis deserve it.

I don't do horror games usually. I barely made it through Silent Hill 1-4 with friends years ago lol
  • I did not heed the warning of this video , and I bought it because it was on sale on the switch . 5 minutes into the game , my gun just disappeared while the character kept repeating " I'm gonna have to shoot my way thru".

Is this a sequel for Grey Skies: War of the Worlds story?

I wish I could say this was more than a personal guilty pleasure but even I find it hard to know who to recommend it to. This IP does have potential for a good horror game and it does have some ok horror locations, but the iffy mechanics, unrefined characters, weak voice acting, bland story and lack of stealth kills can make it unengaging unless you really just wanna shoot some zombies during an alien invasion. Yeah, that is what makes this a letdown; I think zombies controlled by alien gore plants coulda been fun to hide from and fight. If only they understood their potential. There's quite a few better alien invasion games, but I will admit it is far from the worst game I've played. If you are curious to know what it is like, I recommend getting it on sale.

Fair review that matches my experience with it. This title and its predecessor are popular choices among platinum hunters because the achievements are easy. I played Grey Skies first and that one is certifiably awful to the point that the developer vowed in 2023 to remaster it and address its issues. Imagine dealing with the bum-rushing enemies of Darker Skies but with no weapon except for crafted throwables, which don't work nearly as well. If you want the platinum in one playthrough, you basically hoard all of the red weed pickups used for upgrades, leaving you with a binary playing style of pure stealth or running away. There's also incredibly frustrating set-pieces owing to clunkiness: a tripod chasing you, and an escape from a tripod inside a hotel, the design and checkpoint placement of which is so egregious you have to assume no external testing was ever done. The developer improved some things in Darker Skies; the operative word being "some". Giving the player a gun, for instance. Level design is more interesting and economical. Believe it or not, the mechanics and movement are less janky than in Grey Skies. Crafting parts and health kits are more numerous. In the first game on Easy you might find 1 kit per area. The irony in Darker Skies is that having more health kits doesn't matter even on Easy: when a female zombie reaches or corners you you're unlikely to use a kit in time while being clobbered to death. I cannot imagine playing either of these games on hard or the last difficulty humorously labeled "Problematic." Both games are simultaneously cakewalks and unfair. That moment you showcased with the dude bursting through the brick wall is such an addle-brained encounter. Darker Skies at least nails the atmosphere pretty well and I liked the environments. There are moments of tension and horror that work, plus a few jump scares that caught me off guard. I guess this is the kind of mediocre game I'd recommend only to somebody who has played all the RE, Silent Hill, Evil Within, and Alan Wake entries, and wants something in this genre that's short. Even then, wait for a sale. It helps if you're patient and sympathetic to indie jank. I am, so I found this a guilty pleasure and moderately fun while recognizing it's a 4/10 at best.

I don't even like horror games, but I love to tune in and listen to you tear in to these low budget tragedies. That might make me a bad person, but I'm comfortable with it. Also: that tentacle-dog thing is legit creepy. Props to whoever modeled that.
  • This game is bullshit, I don't even want to continue playing.
  • @BrainofQuinn
This game is such an empty mess. At some point my gun just disappeared. No sense of direction, random dialogue that doesnt follow up with any other story or reason. This game literally doesnt feel even finished, I know its lower budget but the visuals and mechanics arent even bad. Its an empty mess haha. Also there was a point where two enemies just walked by me and didnt even notice me. But all the designs in this game is why i bought it for 3$ Edit: Also i dont mind the characters mechanics but what makes it worse is the enemies attacks mechanics are just ridiculous
