40 day long trip across the Umnak Island

The Aleutian Islands are an archipelago of 110 volcanic islands in the North Pacific Ocean, part of the state of Alaska. Presently, there are approx 25 active volcanoes. The islands are located between Alaska and the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia, making up the dividing line between the Bering Sea and the Pacific Ocean.

The main settlement of the archipelago of islands is Dutch Harbor, located on the island of Unalaska. It is here that most of the fish are caught, which is imported not only to the United States but throughout the world; the famous snow crab and fillet fish at McDonald's are from here.

One of the topics most closely associated with the Aleutian Islands is bad weather. The average temperature in summer is 7 degrees Celsius, and in winter it is about zero degrees Celsius. But winds and rains make this climate truly harsh. The islands are also known as the birthplace of storms.

There are volcanoes on the island of Umnak, which are active to this day.
On the northeastern part of Umnak Island is the snow-capped caldera of Okmok volcano with six miles in diameter. The volcano is just over 1000 m high, although it is not as tall as its brethren, it occupies nearly half the island. The volcano is divided into two calderas, formed by eruptions many years ago. A crater lake once filled most of the caldera. The prehistoric lake reached a depth of 150 metres. It would still be there if it were not for the speed of erosion and the eruption in 2008 that changed the caldera. It created five large lakes and many smaller ones.

I was raised in Alaska, my dad was born in Bethel in 1944, my grandfather was there during the Japanese attack and helped train the people of that area to protect their land best they could. It’s strange how America never talks about that much, these people died and suffered and were forgotten if you ask me.

I feel like I’m watching a National Geographic film 🤯
  • I live in Akutan and you did a wonderful job on showing the true beauty of the area. Thank you

Probably the best documentary video I’ve seen the last 7 years. Such a great work!

It's incredible that you can make such an instructive and comprehensive documentary about a speck in the ocean that goes for more than an hour! I love every minute of it. Excellent filming under difficult conditions and a wonderful insight into the hard trek Mariana and Victor completed. Informative and entertaining , just perfect.

I have traveled the world on YouTube and Google Maps. This was certainly one of my more wonderful journeys! I can't feel the cold or the wind from the comfort of home but sometimes I wish I could. Thank you for fueling my vicarious living. (There are two "street view" spots in Nikolski in Google Maps.) As for my own real-life journeys, I traveled from Virginia Beach to Kodiak by van with my 12-year-old son in July/August 2012. 5280 driving miles plus the ferry ride from Homer. Many great tales and memories.

This truly is a masterpiece. Haven't seen a documentary the past years that kept my attention as long and as good as this one. I just can't believe that this isn't a huge production by e.g. the BBC. Keep going like this! You will go places :).
  • What a fabulous film and extraordinary landscape! Thank you for taking the effort to put English subtitles on your great commentary so we could enjoy from New Zealand! :)
  • I lived at Unalaska for many years. Went with a small group of people to do some exploring at Fort Glen on Umnak. The weather got bad like it always does and we were stuck there for almost a week before a plane could pick us up. Best adventure in my whole life! Thank you for sharing this vlog with us Viktor. It was so amazing to see the island again.
  • As a commercial fisherman I spent a lot of time around Umnak. It was nice to see the whole island. I was happy to see you visited in August the best time of year to be there. You captured the awesome beuaty of the Aleutian islands Next time buy some x-tra tuff boots and rain gear in Dutch Harbor. The boots alone would have improved your life by %1000.

What an adventure! That was beautiful, fascinating, and very instructive. Congratulations for this trip!
  • The cinematagtophy is so good. I had no idea Alaska had islands that looked like this. Here I thought I needed to go to Norway or Iceland to see this kind of beauty but it's right here in the US.
  • Incredible, Viktor, just Incredible. This is world class nature filmmaking.

I spent a year on Kodiak Island in the U.S. Navy in 1960-61. It was a beautiful island, with fearsome winds called willie waws, but until I watched this video I was unaware of the spectacular and wild islands such a Umnak west of Kodiak. I greatly admire your courage and appreciate your showing this superb video.
