Harry Potter Practical Effects You Thought Were CGI

Creating the world of Harry Potter had a lot more real magic behind the scenes than we would have expected. While CGI played its part, tons of major and surprising special effects were done practically with handmade mechanisms and camera tricks.
For the most part, the animals we see on set were actually there - including the phoenix, Fawkes! Whether the animals were real or a shockingly convincing creation, fully equipped to be able to move around seemingly on their own - they brought major realism and true magic to the screen.
The Wizard’s chess set was larger than life - literally! Rupert Grint actually got to sit on a giant chess piece. The doors of the Chamber of Secrets and many Gringotts vaults looked too good to be true, but those were actually created and included a ton of intricate detail to really bring the fantasy. When casting spells, CGI was a major contributor, creating the lights we see flying out of wands - all except for one - the “Lumos” light!
Not many people get to experience what it would feel like to literally inflate - but the actress who played Aunt Marge lived the experience on set while wearing multiple inflatable costumes and enduring multiple makeup and prosthetic changes. Mad-Eye Moody actor Brendan Gleeson also got to experience a fake magical eye like his character - the main difference being the one Gleeson used was equipped with a radio controller!
Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint really got to experience a lot of magic - even when they were wrapped up in the Devil’s Snare, they really had fake vines wrapped around them, with people controlling all the puppet limbs! They also got to hold a three dimensional Marauder's Map. It wasn’t all fun and games though - the young actors also had to face enormous replicas of terrifying creatures like Basilisks and super-sized tarantulas. All these practical effects used to bring the magic just makes us appreciate these films even more!

Imagine how weird it must have been to play aunt marge- you'd have to act like you could explode at any second and be suspended in the air

  • This is why HP is one of the best series. They use real props and animatronics to make the movies stand out
  • One of kind ,amazing considering the mechanics behind every props and doing it in real life not by just editing , proves that harry Potter is a quality movie and story, and seeing them how.they get old, and their bind is really.like a real family behind the scenes 🥰❤
  • Honestly why didn't they keep on with movies like these? Everything's so "modern" now and it's getting kind of boring for me-

I was most impressed by the slight of hand in Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban

MCU should do more practical effects. They overuse CGI, when they should balance them both and use it when really necessary
