So.
The original line was, “If they give you ruled paper, write the other way.” As far as I can tell it’s Juan Ramón Jiménez’s.

I am also now painfully aware I've written a half as '2/1'. Sorry maths.

Please note that this wasn’t intended to be a diatribe against critics or experts. They obviously play an important role. It was more directed at the recreational cynicism one comes across in daily life from time to time, generally pointed at young artists. I have had the privilege to meet plenty of people 1000x more talented than me, who are simultaneously doubting their abilities because of some stupid comment made by an unpleasant teacher or jaded family member.

If you are that artist, I really just wanted to say: You’re in good company; the Greats doubted themselves too. Don’t let the bastards get you down and I hope you make all manner of interesting and fantastic things.

The music is the 3rd movement of Big Baus Brahms’ Violin Concerto in D Major:    • Video

I like that piece lots. I hope you do too.

Again, all the very best of luck in your projects.

Mom! the depression turtle called me a shit again.

"If one is cautious about persuing an unusual path, it may help you to remember that the cynics will be forgotten just as readily as your failures will be, too". Damn, this motivated me so much.

"Cynics will be forgotten just as readily as your failures will be" is the best thing I've read today

  • I am rewatching this every time I get depressed or before important attempts like a dream job interview, and it works just amazingly perfectly. It gives me that calm yet excited feeling to try and believe in myself. That's art, I don't know what kind of art it is, it's not a book, movie, music, or picture, it's... all of that combined! Probably we will name this type of art in the future because it needs to be remembered. Thank you, exurb1a, you did made something remarkable!!
  • I'm 32 and just came home from a tutorial in my Masters at uni. Professor told me that my Master thesis idea was probably a little 'too esoteric' and 'perhaps not workable'. Maybe he's right and I won't find a teacher at uni who is willing to help me write this thing, but goddamnit if I can't make a master thesis out of it I will do this research on my own and write this thing and publish it my fucking self. And if all else fails I'll turn it into a youtube video series just because. NEVER TELL ME THE ODDS, IT CAN BE DONE!

As of now 1.3 million people have watched this video, so statistically at least one of them will be one in a million remarkable at something.
  • @eliwatson7936
9:41 you would not believe how much that freaked me out absentmindedly listening in the background then hearing you address me by name
  • I'm.. kind of speechless. Not sure I've ever experienced a more strangely effective pep-talk

what i got from that: drink eight bottles of port a day and buy a bear work as a pirate accountant and you will be a great person

I can't think of anything other than to say "I love you" to you. It's like I'm five again and you're my parent who did something completely ordinary yet unbelievably magnificent for me.
  • Idk if I've ever legitimatley been inspired by something before. Good job, the best part was mentioning that Van Gogh didn't start until he was 27. Such a perfect way to counter all the doubts spurred on by people like Mozart

I love how these videos all go from like, intense existentialism, to wholesome encouragement and genuine advice on how to be happy.
