Just a note about Billy Powell. He was a roadie for the band who one day mentioned he played some piano. The rest is history.

Greetings Gray Wolf, I dig your reaction to this iconic video. Ronnie Van Zant (vocals) Gary Rossington (slide guitar) Allen Collins (guitar/dressed in white) Steve Gaines (guitar) Leon Wilkeson (bass) Billy Powell (piano) Artimus Pyle (drums) That was at an annual event called Day on the Green. The other bands performing that day were Peter Frampton, Santana and Outlaws.
  • It was awesome. I was there. Yes, under $20 tix, no cameras, cell phones, sunscreen, just fun and sun. They had the crash about a month after this show. That it hard! The birds were set free.

I seen them 3 times before the plane crash and April 2024 I seen the modern Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top. Ronnie’s brother sings lead now and have been the last 36 years.
  • Day on the green Oakland, California around 70,000 people northern California back then was a special time and place and the best looking women in the country hands-down
  • They had a house out in the middle of nowhere, where they would write and sing songs. Most of the time they were tripping on mushrooms when they did.
  • The bird chirps took an old corasidian asprin bottle slid on the strings to make those birds sounds.
  • Billy Powell's Bud can may be one of the old steel ones, with the seam down the side. Also, wouldn't you count the bass guitar in with the other three?! Gotta give Leon Wilkeson some recognition for his artistry! I think I've heard there were 50,000 to 63,000 folks in attendance at that particular Day on the Green -- with a line-up like they had, and for cheap tix, those numbers are entirely possible. ENERGY IS RIGHT!!!
  • ALL those eager girls you see were there to see Frampton. Skynyrd opened for him that day.
  • No cell phones, no bras, no problems. Just a good damn time.
  • Remember , those old Bud cans wee made of hard steel . Not Aluminium .
