Ukraine and Russia have blamed each other after a fire broke out at the giant Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant on Sunday.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russian forces had started a fire at the plant, which has been occupied by Moscow's forces for more than two years. Zaporizhzhia's Kremlin-installed governor said Ukrainian shelling caused the blaze.

The UN's nuclear watchdog said it saw "strong dark smoke" coming from the facility - but said there was "no impact reported" for nuclear safety.

The development comes as Ukrainian troops have advanced up to 30km inside Russia, in the deepest and most significant incursion since Moscow began its full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Russia has so far struggled to halt the Ukrainian advance, with more than 76,000 people evacuated from the Kursk region, where a state of emergency has been declared by local authorities.

Russia is so desperate to steer focus from Kursk they started burning tires in the tower to create outrage.
  • It's a shame that Ukraine always has to play by honourable rules when their ennemy respects no rules at all.
  • The fire at Zaporizhzhia is Russia's fault. They can remove their risk of being responsible by leaving. Based on the simple principal they should not be their full stop.

It almost looks like smoke from burning tires set by the Russian occupiers.
  • Cooling towers are concrete and water pipes only. Nothing to burn that wasn't brought in. Drones can't carry this amount of fuel.

well one thing for sure it was not started by ukrainian shelling since that's what the russian claim
  • Cooling towers are concrete chimneys with steel water pipes in them. Even if Ukraine had shelled them they wouldn’t burn. Concrete and steel don’t burn like that. Looks more like the burning tyres theory, possibly as burn pits for waste disposal (hopefully not nuclear) The only other thing like this I’ve seen is Fred Dybnah using burning tyres to bring down chimneys without using explosives.

Why does the BBC release videos in such low resolution? 480p? Really?

I'm glad that Ukraine is finally taking the war into Russia. As long as the war is restricted to Ukraine no one in Russia has an incentive to demand the end to it. I also blame the NATO countries for the way they have let politics make their support waiver. If the US, Britain, France, Germany and Poland ordered Putin to pull his troops from Ukraine in 10 days the war would be over. They are rewarding Putin's agression with their lack of meaningful response. He can't fight everyone and he knows it.

The reactor is a mile away from the cooling towers by design. Any fire occuring at the towers is local to the towers. Likely burning tires as others have suggested
  • I just heard Putin is gay. That explains a lot. All that build up frustration must be hard. Is it real ??

Thanks to everyone who supports Ukraine! ✌️✊🇺🇦🕊️

The simple fact that Russia uses a niclear plant as a shield shows how much they care.

United Nations claim sky is blue. Russia denies this report.

Lol, how can a journalist stationed in Moscow be unbiased and open in his reporting?

The russian federation always pretends to be so strong and big, but in reality it cannot protect its own borders from small and courageous Ukraine 🇺🇦
