I wanted to see if this micro lathe could actually make anything useful out of steel.

Great job my friend that's is a nice machine with really good bits an a few more cutting bits that will be the only machine for small jobs because I just watched you make something that is a hard job on a costly machine thanks for the great videos but my friend I just can't find that lathe that you have there so help me out if you don't mind or do you want to get rid of that one you have just asking thanks again till later
  • 90% of lathe videos are making something to improve the lathe!

By the end of the job the chuck bearings looked worn right out and the work piece was jumping all over the place. This would be totally useless for anything that needed to be dead square.

Well done! You burnt the drill because the chuck was rotating way too fast, though that lathe probably doesn't have speed regulation? In the other hand, sharpening drill bits it's a bit more complicated than simply refreshing the cutting face straight, though not much more once you get used to it. It needs certain geometry and relief basically, which is probably the reason it took you more time to do. Drilling with the tailstock is one of those operations you can do in a lathe with the chuck rotating relatively slowly, while exerting force on the drill bit (after you have spot the center of the blank). Plenty of videos to look here on yt if you have interest in getting the most out of it. Cheers!

Not the correct drill bit for that app...
