During my military time in Germany in the early 60's, I spent much time as a regular on the Stammtisch in a local Gasthaus. Here I met an older German man and his daughter and her boyfriend who would occasionally drop in. One night, this young couple had an attractive young German woman with them. Unfortunately, she was sitting across the table and we did not have much chance to converse. As luck would have it, a few weeks later I ran across my German acquaintances at the annual town festival in Darmstadt and this young lady was with them.. We ended up in the beer tent for well into the evening. My friends had to call it an evening, but I invited the young lady out for coffee at the rest stop o the Autobahn ( it was the only place open at 3 AM ).That was July of 1964. We were married in Darmstadt on the following Christmas Eve! Sometimes you know it is right! In a giant leap of faith, she came with me back to Chicago the following May and we had 50 years of marriage together until her death in 2014. In 2005, we moved to Nalf's hometown of Portland, Oregon, where I still reside 9 years after her passing away. It is obvious that Nalf and Laura are smitten and I would expect this to be a lasting ad loving relationship. After all, she did survive meeting the Nalf's family here in Portland!

I still think you two should do a collab with Feli and her American boyfriend (Ben). An American guy with a German girlfriend with a German girl with an American boyfriend all talking about their intercultural relationships.

Like many great relationships, it's equal parts cool and scary how tenuous and relatively random your original connection was. Good stuff.
  • Wonderful Story :) Wishing you and Laura just the best, stay happy, healthy and appreciate each other ever day. Your story reminds me to the story of my Korean wife and myself (German). When I "met her online" on LinkedIn (no kidding) I lived and worked and Bangkok. We exchanged messages like for 3 months before we met in Korea the first time... and then flew over to Seoul every two weeks, similar to your hangout pattern ;) One year after, I moved to Seoul and here we are now... married since 5 years living in Spain!

LOL I still remember that video where you sternly declared that it isn't good to have a (German) girlfriend here in Germany. You two look happy and I wish you all the best. Also, good wishes to Cody and Speedy!
