Cal Newport is an associate professor of computer science at Georgetown University and the author of six books including his latest, "Digital Minimalism: Choosing a Focused Life in a Noisy World".

In my opinion, this episode rates among my most consequential. Packed with actionable steps, Cal's message will empower you to free up precious time. Declutter your mind. Connect you more deeply to the work and relationships you care most about. And profoundly improve the quality of your professional and personal lives.

It was an absolute pleasure to spend time with Cal. I sincerely hope you not only enjoy the listen, but heed his message, and put his advice into action.

As a person who used to waste probably half the day scrolling social media for almost 4 years straight, I can say how addictive the virtual world can become and so recently I have literally deleted all my social media accounts and have been on a digital detox for the better part of September and now October in a few days and trust me I will never go back Social media and the virtual world is a means of giving you that instant gratification where you dream about the life you could have had while in reality, you aren't progressing in the real world and once I realized this, I completely gave up on social media and I don't think I have ever taken a better life decision than this

From 7pm I close down the laptop and turn off the phone. Its wonderful. Just me and my books. Daydreams. Quiet. The mind fills up with a dreamy solitude without constant shallow distraction.

I love that definition of solitude = 'freedom from input from other minds'

As a motorcycle rider this is a reason why we ride. Is just you, your thoughts, and all free smells from the restaurants. That's why some people say riding is my therapy.

My teenage niece developed a phobia of screens last year. She canā€™t look at phone, computer, or TV without getting sick. Since then sheā€™s read scads of books and written 3 novels, and is very happy. Iā€™ll be watching her to see what life can be like without screens. Meanwhile I am loving YouTube and voraciously learning about so many interesting things on it. Edit: two years later she can look at screens now and is writing, animating, and communicating with friends on it.

The Book is great, and well worth the purchase for the investigative information alone. Twenty years from now weā€™re going to look back at this moment in time and realize that we failed our youngest generations by allowing their tech addiction to get so out of control. And weā€™re going to wish that we had done more to limit the manipulative aspects of this technology.

He sounds like a clear minded guy who isnā€™t contaminated by social media.

One of the proudest moments of my life was being rejected by a girl on tinder because I don't have a snapchat

Recently my electricity was turned off while work was done on the poles and lines near me. It was like living 200 years ago, but I got so much done in the day and went walking with a friend. An enlightening experience. Great talk guys - thank you

It's unbelievable that I can listen to Cal Newport for hours and hours. Thank you for the great show! xx
  • @tkerby91
So glad I came across Cal - I've managed to dramatically reduce my screen time each day and no longer really check social media and feel much better for it, I'm more focussed on trying to build physical relationships

This is the most intelligent and powerful discussion about information technologies I have ever heard. The salient points are very congruent with Dr. Carl Jung's writings about psychic energy and libido. I could not find anything to criticize about these two people in this discussion. Everybody needs to hear Cal Newport describe these facts with Rich Roll flowing through the best descriptions of complex topics possible. Thank you both. Please keep up the good work.

I listened to this audiobook, built and implemented the plan. It's AMAZING how much time you reclaim. For me it wasn't productivity time, I'm already productive at work. But it's the freeing up of so much leisure or bonus time that I was immediately more relaxed and felt like my life was WAY less hectic.
  • @willhelliwell
I never thought about the need to have a philosophy behind doing something like eating better or digital minimalism. It makes total sense
  • @Mark-qj5kp
I feel like this is one of the most important podcasts on the internet. Thanks for hosting this one, Rich!
