Today Architectural Digest brings you inside one of Los Angeles' most legendary properties, The Manor, currently on the market for $165 million. Built in the style of a French chateau by Hollywood impresario Aaron Spelling and family, the estate boasts 14 bedrooms and 27 baths across over 4 and half verdant acres - larger than either the White House or Taj Mahal.

Whoever "decorated" this estate did a great job, it really made me want to move in and change everything
  • I like how their library doesn't try to overdo it with the books. Or nearly any books for that matter.
  • @damonblade3195
I have never seen such a gigantic library with that few books in my entire life !

I’ve never understood why larger estates have such a random ratio of bathroom and bedrooms. Why does any house need 27 baths with 14 bedrooms
  • I will never understand rich people who have the money to build huge, beautiful closets and the best they can come up with is something that looks like a shop

Some of the house really gives off "big event" vibes. Like it's totally not intended for families to live, but instead to constantly rent it out to strangers. I mean I like how spacious this is, but it feels more like they turned large halls into a luxury places to sit and talk during big events. That's it. I can't even call it a home. It doesn't feel cozy at all. And why are there so many couches everywhere... This gives major "rich guy with zero taste who didn't know what to do with all that space"-vibes.

Bless his heart. He's trying so hard to convince himself and others that this isn't completely awful.
  • Projects done on this large of a scale are rarely done tastefully and this home has failed to break that pattern

I absolutely love the quaintness and small “intimate” feeling of this little cabin in the city.
  • Thank you Architectural Digest, as an architectural designer, I took this as a lesson in how NOT to design a large house. It's garish and below your usual standard.

I really HATE when they show these AMAZING properties and DON"T show the garage area. You know these people have fleets of cars and it would be great to see where they keep them

A family home for generations…now on the market after just the one 😅
  • While I don’t think I would refer to this house as ever being visually on par with genuine châteaux built in centuries past, I still find it interesting to compare how it looked originally to how it looks now as it quickly becomes apparent that the designers in charge of each version had very different visions in mind: whereas the original attempted to artificially evoke feelings of old world grandeur, wealth, and respectability, the current iteration seeks to shed the idea of belonging to a long line supported by intergenerational wealth and instead seeks to appeal to the tastes of new-moneyed celebrities and influencers.
  • I once interviewed for a live-in position here. And I had my interview with Petra in the primary suite. It was absolutely crazy. The interview was actually really nice little conversation with the primaries who were really chill, but the whole attitude in the house from the other staff was just so scary. I was literally shoved into a closet by the maître d’, because he thought that one of the primaries might be walking down the hall at the same time and it would be rude to even be seen.

Taj Mahal is not a world wonder, for its massive size. It's more of the beauty. So... Idk why AD felt the need to compare it here. I'd recommend Chitorgarh fort if you need size comparisons of old-world architecture in India.
  • The inside looked WAY better when the Spellings owned it. It actually matched the theme, architecture, and aesthetic of the home.
  • @bithewaydands
I love the library being described as “intimate” 😋
  • Renovations of The Manor were done shortly after Petra Ecclestone purchased the estate (if memory serves me right). Originally, The Manor's interior looked entirely different. Candy Spelling (wife of Aaron Spelling) explained more about the primary heart and soul of the estate in a video a few years ago.

I absolutely love AD, but I feel like more and more they are missing the mark lately. I think most of us are looking to experience beautifully curated houses, great design and inspirational homes. It seems like now they are showcasing homes with little character and featuring artists and celebrities that have no style or whatsoever.
