When you pulled Human out, I immediately thought "don't you say Cosmic Sea, don't you do it!" And then you did. And I get it, it's not all that "Death", but that cosmic atmosphere just feels perfect to me.

Here’s my defense of Eye of the Beholder: “You can do it your own way/ if it’s done just how I say” has to be one of the coolest and most memorable lyrics in metal…and those lyrics were delivered by Hetfield at the top of his game
  • Thanks for jumping on this, interesting picks too, I think a few have found this quite challenging, glad I could get the cogs grinding!

Nick, first song that comes to mind is "Test" by Ministry on "A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste" Also as a bass player...I like Cosmic Sea and Dawn Patrol.

This was a great and fun discussion. I had to disagree with about 4 of these; Eye of the Beholder, Real Eyes Realize Real Lies, Cosmic Sea, and Mascara but the other songs I've always found to be filler. Still all great albums though.

I don't see repetitive riffs and news samples on that Machine Head track as filler; it's more mood music to me. The fact that the song sounds that different adds variety to the album. The riffs are intentionally repetitive and looped to serve the mood of the song, which is different from the rest of the album and adds variety. And Cosmic Sea is great, too. I like it when bands add things like keyboards, ambience, experimentation - color your album with different shit for variety! It's more interesting than like, Panzer Division Marduk which is just mostly a blast beat from start to finish.

On the flipside, I'm not sure if it's going around but maybe do "One killer song off a terrible album." Might be challenging because a lot of terrible albums don't always have salvage value.
  • Gotta say I love how Rob turns BLOCK into a two syllable word in that song. Knew I loved that song the second I heard that.
  • You guys have expanded my love for all things heavy, everyday is a new band or album. My therapy now is to put on music like before work and jam out the emotions like not wanting to be there. Feels like I'm hanging with my true friends from HS just talking Metal shop. Take it easy or any way you can get it guys. PS: Rin makes some of the funniest faces I have ever seen, he gets me so weak lmao.
  • I was going to do a video for this response as well, but I honestly couldn't think of 10 albums. Cool video anyway, dude.

Side Note: I made a custom version of Around the Fur years ago where I replaced Mascara with Teething from the Crow City of Angels soundtrack. It fits in perfectly between Inhabia and the title track and took the album from a 9 out of 10 to a full 10 out of 10. Try it if you have the time.

I’ve been in an insane And Justice For All kick the past few weeks. Agree with Eye of the Beholder. If you had said Blackened, we would be fighting... However, my number one vote would have gone to Orgasmatron on Arise... PS- isn’t it about time for a Metallica album rankings?

Great review Nick! Can't wait for you guys review on the MIGHTY Exodus dropping friday!! I'll be tuning in for sure been waiting soo long lol .
  • Good subject. There are so many songs that I skip over from my favorite bands: Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Death, Vader, Metallica, Slayer, Flotsam & Jetsam, Kreator, Testament, Crowbar, Iron Maiden. The list goes on. 🥱
  • I would add "Bullituary" on Obituary's "Back From The Dead". An otherwise decent album slightly ruined by that track. Most people that dog on that album is usually because of that track. Bullshituary!

"can't all be zingers" sweet Primus reference! Hot take 🔥 I personally like the band ATHEIST more than DEATH. I feel like ATHEIST is one of the most underrated bands in extreme metal! Great video as always!!!!
  • @benng4376
Mexican Radio on Into The Pademonium.
  • Nice list Nick. Since you are a Pantera and sludge metal fan, I would submit NOLA by Down. Killer of an album, definitely one I will listen to to my grave. Except Jail... It's definitely a klunker for me on an otherwise flawless Sludge Epic. Dunno if you agree with that statement. I heard live on a stream and Phil really struggles with this one!

Oh I like Mascara. I think it works, and it does have a hook, to me. The song I actually like least is Soulfly. It pains me to say it, because it is a song in memorial and was healing to them, but it just feels cobbled together and I don't feel like Max's and Chino's voices mesh that well.
  • Cosmic Sea is amazing! The rest though you are spot on I think you pointed out alot of classic "meh" moments in metal history lol
