I´m in shock. Yes, I have my history with Deep Purple. They were the band for which i started collecting vinyl back in the late 80s. But they kind of fell away from me for quite a while now. While I still like their Mark I & II stuff, afterwards they were cancelled for the rampant misogyny of their third singer and after the reunion, they were just not that good anymore, so the last album I really digested was 1993s Slaves and Masters. that´s when them and me parted for good. I did check out their last one, but that only assured me that it´s not worth bothering. And that now out of all bands just Deep Purple comes along messing up my albums of the year list, 50 years after their last really good album, that i find myself listening to this album over and over again .... I´m in shock

Deep Purple and Yes are touring together in the US in August and early September.
  • I saw Deep Purple in concert in February 2012. They were nearing the end of a month-long Canadian tour and they came to Victoria, British Columbia [my hometown] for the second-to-last stop on the tour. The lineup had Ian Gillan on vocals, Don Airey on keyboards [his predecessor Jon Lord passed away in July 2012, only five months after I saw Deep Purple], Roger Glover on bass, Ian Paice on drums and Steve Morse on guitar. Morse left the band a decade later [2022] as he had to care for his wife, who was battling terminal cancer [she sadly passed away this past February].
  • I heard the first 2 songs and it surprised me how good it sounded. Yeah Ian Gillan doesn't have that ungodly scream anymore, but he still sounds good to these ears. I'm 60 and Deep Purple was a part of my youth with In Rock and Machine Head. And I still listen to them once in a while. I miss Richie Blackmore, but he's out somewhere playing some weird Pilgrim Lutie stuff with his wife. (Richie gonna be Richie) The last DP album I bought was Perfect Strangers 40 years ago and it was very good. Gonna give this one a listen also. Lots of old bands coming out with great stuff. And I love it. Good to see you guys are reviewing bands that not only influenced the heavier stuff we listen to today, but set the standard way back in the late 60's and early 70's. If it's good, it's good. Great review ToM.

I gave it 4.0/5.0 on my review. I was surprised because I really have not been into anything Deep Purple since Perfect Strangers. The only thing I did not like is the laziness of the album cover and title. But I am glad you guys dug it too. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
  • Thank you for reviewing the new Deep Purple and I'm glad you liked it! They are possibly my favorite band of all genres of all time. I've been a fan since 1983-ish when my father "forced" me to listen to them. Needless to say I became a fan right away and I quickly discovered their back catalog and jumped on board with the new material in the 80s and 90s. Initially I had a hard time accepting Deep Purple without Ritchie Blackmore but I knew he didn't want to be in there anymore. Deep Purple went on with Steve Morse made some great stuff and Ritchie did Rainbow and Blackmore's Night which I love all of it. Simon McBride does a great job and the new album is great for what it is in my opinion. Feels fresh to me. Maybe a little too long and too many songs. I also had such high expectations about the ending of Pictures of you but I felt disappointed by how they left that unfullfilled. I'm glad that you're not exclusively doing metal! Cheers :)
  • Great review as always! I'm a pretty big Deep Purple fan but haven't heard anything after Perfect Strangers. Will definitely be checking this one out! Thanks 🤘🤘

Bought the LP at the Beyond the Gates festival last week, but haven't played it yet. Might just do that tonight!
  • I have a soft spot for Deep Purple. They were the first hard rock band I heard and I liked them a lot. This was 1972 and I was seven years old then. My older cousin was listening to Made in Japan. I’ll be checking out the new release.
  • Loved this album, I love extreme metal but I'll always have a place for deep purple and other bands like van halen, Böc, thin lizzy etc. Their run of albums since "now what?!" have been awsome.

I also have not really listened to Deep Purple since Perfect Strangers, but in 2015 I heard the song Vincent Price which is a ripper.
  • That makes me happy to read, your caption there. Gives me hope to get older and still be cool and still rock. I had my reservations of this bein possible.
  • @DashieNegan41
Deep Purple who have been there from the beginning shows how great they are and this album is fantastic 4.5/5
  • Soy fan de deep purple desde hace décadas ,y realmente este nuevo disco es muy Bueno son leyendas vivas!!!!💜💜🎸🎸🤘🏻🤘🏻

Great review, 100% agree with you. I like this album because it sounds like Deep Purple should. CORONER\m/.

HI guys. I've listened to this album 4 times now and it grows on me more each time. For the band to produce something of this standard at their age is quite phenomenal. I listened to your review and agree with most of it. What I disagree with are your comments on Ian Gillan's vocals. Yes he's 78 and clearly he can't sing like he once could. You stated that they could have polished the vocals up and maybe added reverb. I disagree, I think he wanted to sing "honestly" and let the cracks in his voice show through. Otherwise it wouldn't be an honest performance. and no doubt people would have been bleating on about him using auto tune or whatever. Anyone can use studio trickery to make themselves sound better, but I'm glad that Ian or Bob Ezrin didn't do that. So what's your favourite track? Has to be Portable Door for me, followed by Lazy Sod. CB - England.(The home of real rock music)
  • I still have their live album Nobody’s Perfect on vinyl which I got when I was about 15. I’m really enjoying this. Only negative would be the album art which doesn’t do it justice
  • @alexperry4691
Not listened to a DP album since Perfect Strangers, but will defo give this one a listen seeing as you guys rate it so highly. In Rock was one of the first albums i ever owned, its still my favourite early Hard Rock release, maybe even surpassing Sabbath's mighty debut which was released the same year!
