Rick Warren on Finishing Well, Why Megachurch Pastors Fail, and Lessons Learned Over 42 Years at Saddleback

In 2021, Saddleback founding pastor, Rick Warren, announced he was retiring as senior pastor to embrace a new role. In this wide-ranging interview, Rick talks about how to leave a legacy of integrity, why so many megachurch pastors fail, what he told Bill Hybels, and lessons learned over 42 years at Saddleback. This episode includes bonus footage of Rick Warren's private library.

  • Ok ... you need to re-title this episode as a "Masterclass on Pastoring". Great stuff! Thanks to Carey and to Rick for sharing all of this with us.
  • “I never learned anything through pleasure. Everything I have learned has come through pain.” - Rick Warren This might be the best interview of Rick Warren on the internet. Every pastor and leader should watch.

“You will attract what you are!” Simple but a powerful statement.
  • Wow!!! There are so many gems in this interview! Thank you so much Carey and Rick. I pray that you will both finish well all the way 🙏
  • The level of pride and covetousness Rick Warren displays in just the first few minutes is astounding. He should take heed to 1 John 2:15-17 “Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. The world is passing away, and [also] its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.”

I need to see the long version of the library tour. Such a great interview!
  • This is incredible! Now that is a library I aspire to develop. Thank you for creating this gentlemen!

about 10 years ago I sort of started a movement in New Zealand called "facethebook" with exactly the same motto Rick just used at about 43 minutes of the conversation. WOW. Well, I've met you Carey personally, that was one of my bucket list items, I told you that when we had our little chat in church. Rick (along with Andy and Craig) are the next in line. If I get to sit in that library I'll say like Simeon: "Take me for I have seen your glory"hahahahhaha. Great talk Carey. Well done!
  • Thank you for this one Ptr Carey and Ptr Rick! So much depth and pure wisdom in one episode. God bless you both abundantly!

Thank you Carey for the interview. Loved the opening into the library and to see Rick's passion for Christian history. Learned a ton from the time.

THANK you. This morning for the beautiful awesome library. Reminds me of a favorite fictional character's library, James Perlmutter. But you are real! My hero.

Such gold. Cried twice, wept once. Beautiful. Thank you Rick for your life-long example!

Did 4yrs at Saddleback & at thru +200 sermons. With respect & sincerity, IF I could sit down with Rick, my top 10: ◾️why doesn't he present the Gospel ◾️why all topical sermons ◾️why obfuscate sin & its severity ◾️why no sermons on wrath, Hell, etc ◾️why majority don't bring Bibles ◾️why use many bible translations ◾️why ordain women pastors ◾️why no doctrinal sermons (example: ⠀Christology, Soteriology, Eschatology) ◾️why is it impossible to actually meet ⠀with Rick to voice these concerns ◾️in light of the prior 9 questions, why ⠀no concern about being at the wrong ⠀judgement: Bema vs. White Throne ⠀ Question 1 is most important & any response would be appreciated. I sat thru +200 sermons & searched YouTube; can't locate an actual Rick Warren gospel presentation. ⠀ Moralistic teaching on felt needs with scripture sprinkled in does not convict, convert, regenerate, or save.
