Who invented Black Metal?
Today we're exploring that question to find the roots of black metal. We're going to explore occultism in rock and metal and try to find the band that started the first black metal wave during the early eighties. What band originated the sign of the horns? Was it really Venom that invented Black Metal or was it Black Sabbath, Coven, Witchfynde, Black Widow or maybe even Angel Witch?

Feel free to let me know your thoughts in the comment section. Enjoy this Black Metal history lesson!

Necrobutcher (Mayhem): "When I heard Venom in 1982, it was like Motörhead only 10 times rawer. They had the punk element but they also had a death metal edge and that was before death metal even existed. It was the whole package. They are my favorite band of all times and to me they're the only band that can really call themselves black metal."

Venom created Black Metal, but Bathory turned it in what is today. "Under The Sign Of The Black Mark" its the link between 80s Metal and the Nordic Black Metal of the 90s (Second Wave)

Frost (Satyricon/1349): "Black Metal as a genre was created by Venom and given a name when they released their second album "Black Metal" in 1982. Still I'd say the starting point was in 1981, with their first album "Welcome to Hell". Venom was the first band to deliberately and convincingly create dark atmospheres in metal, and they also did their metal harder, rawer and dirtier than any band before them. That pretty much defined the frames of Black Metal."

Crazy World of Arthur Brown is like a 60s version of Ghost. :)

The pioneers were Venom, Bathory, Mercyful Fate, Hellhammer, Sarcofago and Sodom.

Euronymous (Mayhem): "Venom was our first and major influence, later Bathory, Hellhammer, Sodom and Destruction. Venom and the other ancient ones have been fundamental influences on Mayhem, and also the direct reason for the band's existence. We like to think that if they hadn't started this up, we would have, but who knows? It doesn't really matter anyway, we hail ancient Venom as the creators.”

Attila Csihar (Mayhem/Tormentor): "I discovered Venom and that was the first kick in my balls to go for extreme metal. I looked for more and more extreme [music] and then, of course, Venom’s "Black Metal" hit me in the face. That was the thing. I remember I went to the record store one day and asked - 'What´s the most extreme thing here, I have this hardcore music already'. And one guy was like 'Okay, give him the Venom record', and he put it on and within ten seconds I was spellbound. I loved it."

Mika Luttinen (Impaled Nazarene): "Basically, I used to listen to rock’n’roll, shit like Matchbox and Stray Cats. Then I heard from the radio Venom´s "Witching Hour" and that fucking changed my life forever. Got "Welcome to Hell" and the rest is history."
  • @keegs1996
The introduction to Venom you did was amazing. The intro of Witching Hour and just the flashes of the eyes from the album cover is just perfect.
  • @darwinblinks
Black Metal was originally invented in 1872 in Prussia by John Henry Blackmetal, but it took over 100 years to catch on.
  • @eumenideia1812
Jon Nödtveidt (Dissection): "I don’t think the black metal bands of today have the same standard as the early bands. Where is the originality and innovation and feeling? All the bands today are looking exactly the same and are sounding exactly the same. When black metal was a new thing all the bands sounded different. Venom was the first. They had their own style. Then we had Bathory, but faster and with rawer vocals. Then we had Mercyful Fate who were very melodic and so on. Bands had their own identity which I miss today.”
  • @eumenideia1812
Grutle Kjellson (Enslaved): “Black metal pretty much started with Venom back in 1981 with the album "Welcome to Hell." Venom doesn’t sound anything like modern black metal bands but it’s still black metal.”
  • @mikesg1776
About time Witchfynde got some accolades for their pioneering work with goats and such.
  • @strawhousepig
I see it as Venom being the point where the seeds took root. Seems others are only about the flower or the fruit, though. I remember being a budding Metal head in 81-82, 6th or 7th grade in school, and hearing Venom for the first time. They absolutely were the extreme. We were scared by that shit, lol.
  • @eumenideia1812
Erik Danielsson (Watain): "I wish I heard Venom and Watain in the same sentence more often. Venom is one of my all-time favorite bands, and I think if you have that sort of background, you might actually be able to relate to what we do as well. Venom are the originators of the black metal movement that we later became a part of and we like carrying that torch onwards and uphold that legacy.”
  • @eumenideia1812
Dead (Mayhem): "I think everything has drifted away from what it once was or should be. Everything comes from our almighty Venom so no one can say their influences come from something else. Wimps shall die and only Venom was real. That was the scene! And that is what I try to pick up in [my] lyrics, what I think black metal was."
  • @hmpz36911
This is the clearest case of who invented what sub-genre. Venom are the undisputed creators of Black Metal.
