Metal School - Riot

Despite a catalogue of great to excellent albums across the past four decades, Riot is a criminally underrated hard rock/metal band from New York that was truly ahead of its time. Guitarist Mark Reale led the group through a variety of lineups and phases but each one of them deserves much closer attention. From the 70s hard rock grooves of Guy Sparanza and bluesy growl of Rhett Forrester to the soaring operatic power metal stylings of Tony Moore, Mike DiMeo, and Todd Michael Hall, this is a band that every heavy metal and hard rock fan should dig into. Get your ears ready for Riot.

  • The greatest band you've never heard of. "Fire Down Under" just melts your face off. One of the best hard rock albums ever committed to Vinyl.
  • Fire Down Under has got to be one of THE most under rated albums of the early 80's

Remember vividly when I'd share I like the band "Riot". Being a female, I was always asked do you mean 'Quiet Riot"? Most thought I didn't know what I was talking about! Thanks, for sharing Riot with us. Great band that I saw at the Alrosa Villa (exact date I can't remember) in the 80's Columbus, Ohio!

This band was soooo underrated... RIP Mark, Guy and Rhett

One of the BEST METAL BANDS EVER due to the FIRE DOWN UNDER album, it's to bad we never got the follow up with Guy Speranza we all craved. FIRE DOWN UNDER is absolutely my fav Metal album, and if you haven't heard it, you really need to.

Bobby Jarzombek didn't join Judas Priest - he joined Halford, Rob's solo band.

Mark R. was a genius. Riot is one of the most important American Metal bands of all time. A lot of great East Coast Metal bands that came up after Riot in the 80’s never got their due either.
  • In Stockholm, Sweden, in the late 70’s, we had only one single record shop dedicated to Heavy Metal. There was no internet, spotify or wotever. But at the small record shop ”Heavy Sound” you had it all. Bands you never had heard of or read about in the meagre Swedish music press. Thats where I discovered Riot in 1978. It was unbelievably cool. I was 16. Still think the first two albums are the best they recorded. Still rocks so good 45 years later!! It is a shame how underrated they are. RIP, Mark and Guy.🎸

Riot is a HM band that is the world’s least underestimated. Mark Reale is a guitarist that is the world’s least underestimated. But in Japan, It’s different. Riot is more popular than Van Halen.Thuder Steel was elected to be the best album in 1989.
  • I love both their Hard Rock era and especially their Power Metal era big time. Thundersteel is one of the greatest albums that I have ever listened to. It is a MASTERPIECE!! Riot in my opinion should have been way bigger than they were. They should of been playing in arenas and stadiums as headliners all around the world. Their music is that amazing to me.
  • @Seccles_11
I can't believe how heavy they were for 1977. 2021 and it still holds up.
  • Great video. This is a thorough and even-handed review of the history of Riot. I appreciate the inclusion of Riot V and I'm glad you like our albums also.
  • @Nick-qf7vt
THE most underrated band of all time! IMO they're the perfect rock/metal band. They should have been enormous.
  • whats interesting about RIot, is that they weren't just an older band that jumped on the Power Metal bandwagon, Thundersteel was a formative album for the Power Metal genre in general, and that's not to say I dislike say bands like Saxon later kind of adopting that sound, but in Riot's case it was more pure in my eyes
  • @martinsane
My introduction to Riot was the 1980 6 song EP "Riot Live", loved spinning Swords & Tequila.
  • @ericv7720
Along with Manilla Road and Cirith Ungol, the forefathers of USPM, though Riot put their debut out a couple years before either of the other two bands.
  • @Tumbleweed_Tx
The first rock star I ever met was Mark Reale. Then I became a pro roadie for a cover band. The first song they played on the first night of my new career was Riot's Swords And Tequila. My buddy JB was Riot's manager in the early 2000s. RIP JB, Mark, and Rhett.

Growing up would listen to whole Narita album over and over. Every song is excellent.
