Top 10 Movie Cars of All Time

Published 2021-06-25
For this Movie List, we're taking a look at vehicles on film. But cars aren't ever just cars on screen. The good ones stand for so much more than that. So we're breaking down cinematic autos not by horse power or speed, but by the psychological function cars serve in film. From forms of rebellion to phallic symbols and everything in between, here are the Top 10 Movie Cars of All Time.

With Fast and Furious dropping F9 this weekend, and the crazy amount of undeniably cool cars the Fast Saga has thrown at us over the years, we wanted to dig a little deeper into why we love cars on screen so much. There's gotta be a reason (or 10) that we respond to movie cars. If it's Tony Stark and his Audi status symbols or Nomadland and a converted home on wheels, the tricked out weaponry of the Batmobile or a Catbus from Hayao Miyazaki and My Neighbor Totoro, or even a stand in for fragile masculinity like any number of Monster Trucks that have shown up on the big screen, a good movie car becomes memorable thanks to an unspoken connection. It doesn't have to be fast, it has to be meaningful!

This episode was written by Billy Jackson and edited by Tom Jorgensen.

Car as Freedom - Vanishing Point (1971) Richard C. Sarafian

I love how they are able to make a list about movie cars engaging and educational

I just had an epiphany about Cinefix's top ten: they are not making top ten videos, not really, they simply want to talk about interesting things in films. So they use the top ten as an excuse in order to have some coherence in their argument. So if you are one of those guys who are upset that the Delorian isn't #1 or even the "choice" in its own category, you are missing the point. They did nominated the car but wanted to draw your attention to another film, not because it is better but because it is more interesting. I , as a massive petrolhead, am very happy that they chose this topic and I respect their opinions even if they are different from my own.
  • You guys are simply the standard for talking about movies on any platform.
  • Every iconic movie car I could think of was mentioned except the German truck from Raiders of the Lost Ark. The entire sequence designed around it is just perfect.
  • @PirateJacques79
Fozzie Bear's 1951 Bullet Nose Commander Studebaker from 'The Muppet Movie' deserved at least an honourable mention.
  • @nesirsitsir
Woah. Completely snubbed the Delorean. I was NOT expecting that.
  • @SixShooterMM
I think Walt Kowalski's Gran Torino deserved at least an honourable mention. Could've fit in the 8th or 1st categories.
  • @NestorCustodio
Honorable mention for the Car As A Character category: the goblin truck from Maximum Overdrive.
  • @elbraymundo
Is there a top 10 movie animals coming? This list could have had a horse in it and I wouldn't have blinked,
  • As a car guy first and a movie guy second, I very much respect and commend the amount of research you did for this video!
  • @Seth-hi5mk
No "Rush" mention? Both the McLaren and Ferrari deserved at least a shout-out
  • Being norwegian, I instantly went to the comments to type one about how they should watch Flåklypa (Pinchcliffe) Grand Prix as it is an absolute treasure of a movie and the car is incredible, but lo and behold, they were miles ahead of me

just noticed the "imaginary" audi from iron man in 2019 became very real this year with the e-tron gt, basicly the same car

I've never been a car person, so it's a testament to how much I adore these lists that I actually found myself getting excited about each and every entry! :)
  • @GabeWeymouth
I was surprised the light bikes from Tron or Tron Legacy were not mentioned!

Men in Black's Ford Crown Vic definitely got snubbed in the cars as stand-ins for characters
  • @Applemind75
No Jaguar Hearse from Harold and Maude. I’m wounded.
  • @joost0133
Rush would have been a great addition to the last category, particularly the Ferrari 312T that Niki Lauda drove and Hunt's McLaren M26
