In this video we highlight 14 details in the World-E levels of Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3, originally accessible only through scanning collectable cards (many of which only available in Japan) with the Nintendo e-Reader peripheral, and now conveniently available on Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.

Super Mario Advance 4’s World-e is essentially its own new Super Mario game, essentially like being the “Sonic Mania” in concept, being that there is something from EVERY mainline platformer up to that point, and the levels are unique and based on said games, even from Super Mario Bros. 2/USA, and some in-game data reveals that there was supposed to be some extra content from SMW2: Yoshi’s Island as well, but that all was sadly cut.

First Super Mario Bros Deluxe and now this? I’m loving these vids focused on less thought of ports!
  • Why'd the Porcupos get their palette changed to look more like Sonic the Hedgehog? Being able to throw the boomerangs is my favorite detail from these levels. It's like a precursor to the boomerang suit from 3D Land.

The E-Levels easily gives you a good reason to play advance 4 and i love it.

I bought Super Mario Advance 4 in Wii U's virtual console back when Wii U's eshop was still open, and it included all the e-Reader levels!

From exclusive power-ups to challenging puzzles, these levels showcase Nintendo's commitment to delivering fresh experiences even within beloved classics.

The E-Reader levels give Mario Players even more of a reason to bask in the sheer amount of new discoveries that can be made 🎮

it is NUTS how a scene like 5:30 was locked behind these cards that so few people had

The GBA SP was my first ever console, with Advance 4 being one of my first games. That special island with the locked houses, the empty castle…it had always intrigued me, but I could never find a way to do something aside from enjoying the music there. Years later I found out (thanks internet) that there was something called e-reader cards & that those were what had kept this special worlds secrets from me, but finding a way to obtain them, especially after so long….not a goal in the realm of possibilities. When GBA Classic came to Nintendo Switch Online, me and my brother, after 20 long years, were finally able to play those stages for ourselves. To see the craziness and crossovers that Nintendo filled them with. It was quite literally a childhood dream come true~

I think technically all these items and enemies are cross-overs with the other Super Mario Advance games, although these are obviously largely based on the SFC versions. Hence the giant turnip. My guess is all SMA games (besides Yoshi’s Island) were developed/ported on the same engine which made such custom levels with legacy gameplay features from SMA and SMA 2 easier to conceive and include in SMA4. Mario’s plucking ability really makes one wonder what could be possible with a Super Mario USA theme in the next Mario Maker.
  • @Ultranger
See? Even Nintendo is constantly just remaking World 1-1
  • @BradTheDead
I really wish these recent releases of SMA4 would have a way to let you use the exclusive e-reader objects, like the cape, in the main SMB3 game. That was something that the cards let you do back then.

What a thorough rundown! Really enjoyed this. Nintendo was clearly having fun.
  • So many things I didn't know about all the time 7:37 and that surprises me the most I thought the boomerang brother was in Mario 3D Land first AND YOU COULD THROW A BUMMERANG IM A OLD 2D GAME WOW

I never had this game on GBA, but I got it when it came to the Wii U's eshop. That version even came with all of the e-reader levels included, which was very nice.
  • @InsideTheFro
This is one thing I always wished I got to experience as a kid. I remember getting the cards in my box for the game, but I never saved up for an e-reader to actually play them. I'm glad Nintendo decided to include the World-e stuff in the NSO port of this game on Switch.
  • @Joker22593
I had all the usa released e-cards for this game as a kid. The coolest part besides these levels is adding all the powerups and features from mario 2 and mario world to this game.
  • @2l84me8
Very cool. I wish I had the E reader. Although I do remember having a few of the cards for some reason.

Since i've played this remake of SMB3, i was thinking some of these ideas predicting the later installments for the NSMB series. Nice to have that Cape detail touch. 👌
