Have you ever opened a bag of chips and thoughts, why is there so much empty space? Did I just pay for mostly air with a side of chips? You are not alone! For years, I've thought I was getting ripped off with each delicious bag of chips. Today, I want to find out if that is true and I am starting with the biggest culprit of them all - Doritos!

Disclaimer: At 11:56, the Breakage Rates for the More Chips Bag and the Average Bag are accidentally swapped; the More Chips Bag Breakage Rate is actually 79.8%, and the Average Bag Breakage Rate is 74.9%.

Hey Theorists! In the video at 11:56, the Breakage Rates for the More Chips Bag and the Average Bag are accidentally swapped; the More Chips Bag Breakage Rate is actually 79.8%, and the Average Bag Breakage Rate is 74.9%. Sorry for the mix up!

I think what this tells me is I'd rather have a lot of smaller doritos that can be packed tighter together (with a more sturdy casing maybe like pringles) than the unoptimized, fragile crushable mess we get
  • @ratdos
I thought I figured it out when I was trying to have off brand Fritos and couldn’t open the bag because it was filled to the brim. I was like “oh they just do it for convenience”

I'm a Packaging Engineer and I went to school for packaging science. I'm glad to see your testing confirmed the stuff I paid a ton money for, to learn at Michigan State University.

Can we take a moment to appreciate that Pringles has full cans 100% of the time
  • @mwbgaming28
I'd rather have a bag completely full of broken Doritos than a bag less than quarter full of whole Doritos that got broken during shipping

Doritos to Food Theorist: "Yes, we already did these experiments."
  • Shoutouts to Utz's Cheese Ball jars for stuffing maximum value into one jar.
  • @dutchy1121
"This product is sold by weight, not by volume" is stated right on the package, or at least it used to be.
  • @JeiJohnson
Not a thing on Game Theory, Film Theory or Food Theory has been as scary as watching MatPat reaching for Doritos with a second left hand...
  • @Jack_Parchmeed
Here is a food theory video idea: How much milk is enough to go in your cereal? or How much milk is the perfect amount in your cereal? It might be a good idea, but it could be really stupid.
  • @abyssal_phoenix
I actually found that a local off brand dorito bag is fuller than a doritos bag and is also a bit smaller too. Win win win for me and nature😂 And i dont know how they exactly do it🤔
  • @b.sharp.
If they were really worried about chip breakage, they would just put them in a box instead. Cheese Its and Pringles do it right.
  • @ethanranft985
Doritos should put this link on their chip bags saying why there’s so much air.
  • Doritos (spicy nacho) is my favorite snack food. The standard grocery store-size bag used to be 14oz. Over time, it went down to 11oz. Now it's down to 9oz. They re-branded the 14oz bag as party-size.
