This is the first year I have no parents to celebrate with. This hits hard.

This is why I love this man! He's a professional, he's performed this song an absolutely ridiculous number of times, and he still gets choked up. A testament to how good the song is and his own emotional investment in it. So good!

It's really weird when you have a favorite artist like Tim that you've known for so long and you feel like you're a close friend to him, you see him singing an old song about his family, getting emotional about how much his life changed, and you just cry through the whole thing like this thing happened to a friend, but again, he has no idea who you are hahaha damn, music is weird. This song is amazing, Tim is amazing.

"..and my Mum." is my stumbling block also. She was the one that pulled us all together for Xmas each year and It's just not the same without her.
  • Condolences to you and the family Tim on the passing of your beautiful mum a few weeks ago. Thinking of you this Christmas x
  • good to see I'm not the only one who can't get through the complete song without having sudden sight problems and breathing issues :) Thanks for the perfect Christmas song Tim. been enjoying it for years and it "hits" as well (if not better) as the first time ...

And it's time to open up Christmas 2023 with the weeping through this brilliantly crafted emotion fest of an Xmas song. Thank you as always Tim Minchin.

I never expected someone to make a secular Christmas song. This is absolutely beautiful. A true work of art.

I keep coming back to this performance vs others that are available because I find it hits differently. It moves me every time how emotional he gets because I can only imagine how different Christmas looks now for his family than when he first wrote the song. It makes me reflect on how my Christmases have changed and how children are growing. His precious infant daughter would no longer be an infant but his message for her still holds true.
  • Hands down my favourite Christmas song. Especially hit home when I was living in Norway and came home to NZ for Christmas with our newborn daughter. ❤ Still brings tears to my eyes.
  • At 31 I was drinking white wine in the sun, 9000 miles from home. And this song broke my heart time and time again, in the best way.

Anybody else watching this over and over? It's breaking my heart and making me smile at the same time❤ Well done Tim Minchin.

My son is 6 and my daughter is 5 months. This song has me at my desk at work bawling my eyes out as i listen to this 6 letter word sing words directly from my heart. Thank you Tim. For being you. Edit: i want to expand. Ive been questioning how do i share the significance of a holiday to my children when i, myself, am jaded by all the information ive obtained directly disputing my childhood. Then you made it clear. Its not about the presents, or the religion, or the food. Its the people who will always be there for you and embracing them with everything you got.
  • I am 21 and Autistic. Christmas for me is always about family and being together. I have had a hard time lately with Uni and depression and this song makes me and my mum cry. We also lost my great grandmother(who's favourite drink was white wine) on Dec 23rd 2018(mum's birthday), right before this was released we got the news that a family member had died by suicide after decades of serious illness and agony, Christmas was her thing. Hug your daughter for us all and let her know that it does get easier eventually. It is an uphill battle but the hill can be conquered.

Saw this live just before covid hit and had a 'moment' with the complete stranger next to me when we both recognised the intro. Should have had tissues to hand.
  • @antmanmax1
Right because holding back tears wasn't hard enough with this damn song without you breaking down, thanks a lot Tim 😭😂
  • My women's chorus sang a choral arrangement of this song in 2017. I chocked up on a particular line every time. "These are the people that make you feel safe in this world." Every time. I love this song so very much. Thank you, Tim.
  • Imagine having your dad write this song about you. I can’t. What an amazing father/daughter relationship- and I’m sure he’s just as wonderful with his son. Beautiful.
  • I've always enjoyed this song, but I just had the chance to see Back, and when I realized he was ending on this, I started bawling and a half hour later I haven't stopped. It's been a decade of loss for my family; starting eight years ago we lost my uncle to cancer, two cousins to suicide, both my maternal grandparents, my aunt in a car crash, and now my remaining Grandpa no longer remembers who most of us are. We normally have Christmas at their place, but with the Alzheimer's and both being in their mid 80s, we decided it was best this year to stay home so they wouldn't risk catching the family cold. Though I believe it was the right decision, knowing that this might be Grandpa's last Christmas (he has cancer now too) left me utterly heartbroken. This song is just as powerful in evoking memories as it is in sowing anticipation. I can look back with gratitude for the holiday seasons spent with those no longer with us, and it redoubles my thankfulness for those we still have. I'm not an atheist like Tim, but his vision of Christmas as being all about family is a beautiful one. Whether you believe or not, the love we share with each other is the most important force in the world. Thanks for reminding us of that with this song, Tim.
