The backyard bass pond has seen it's first winter and now is the time to get on the ice and send a camera down to see what signs of life we can find underneath the winter ice. The underwater camera gives a good look at the growing fish, which look much larger and healthy. Winter also creates a great time to check pond depth. After a few holes are drilled with the ice auger, we get a good read on the water depth from one end of the pond to the other. Many comments came in on the previous pond stocking video from viewers mentioning that the pond needs more structure.

So, we took out this year's Christmas tree and placed it on the pond with the hopes of it sinking to the bottom in the spring to create a minnow and fish hiding area, and breeding structure...and added two more treetops for good measure. We'll have to wait to find out if the trees will sink or float, and if I'll have to get them to sink with added weight once the ice melts and the pond opens up.

We also got a backyard rink going on the pond over the winter and it turned out pretty well. It was shovelled off and even flooded with a layer of water pumped up from below the ice. Nice and smooth for skating which is an added bonus on northern fish and bass ponds...you can skate on them!

If you want to catch up on any of the previous videos, click the links below. This pond was dug and created with an excavator the past summer. Once the water cleared and settled, I started stocking various bait and fish. Bass, Sunfish, Perch, Catfish, and crayfish were all added over the summer. We'll be doing videos over this summer season as the pond continues to grow into its own sustainable water environment and fish habitat. Check out the videos below that got us this far and subscribe for more to come.

Good video.Last year I put up a windmill with a air diffuser which keeps the pond healthy all year long
  • These videos are extremely helpful as I’m looking to do something similar on my property (which has a water table around 3 feet). Do you know how big the pond is in acres?
