I don't see too many people talking about the Judgment games, and I feel like that's a shame, cause there's a lot to do and talk about with them. And with the games finally coming to Steam, now's the time to get into them!

"oh it's a lawyer badge, so you're not a détective" One of those times where presenting the badge is actually the good option. Wait...

Finally!! More people talking about this series. The character of Yagami was actually also inspired by one of Kimura’s most popular characters, a quirky prosecutor named Kohei Kuryu in the massively popular franchise, HERO. They share a lot of similarities, one being their incessant pursuit of the truth no matter the odds.

A cool trivia, Takayuki Yagami's actor Takuya Kimura had previously played a somewhat similar character in an extremely popular Legal Procedural TV drama HERO, where he plays a casual cloth wearing public prosecutor and investigator.

Judgment’s story deserves a full in-depth analysis from you and needs more love from fans. People rave about Yakuza 0 (and deservedly so, it’s another amazing game), but Judgment is another feather in RGG’s cap that’s a prime example of quality video game storytelling on-par with 0! Make that video, Kamen. It’s for the greater good

Detective Adventures of Judge Guy and Walmart Kiryu as they fight Coo Roy Wah
  • I remember when I first stumbled on this game at game stop. I was on a MASSIVE Yakuza kick after getting into the series and finishing Kiwami 2. The change from slightly dopey Yakuza to a lawyer turned dectective was such a great change.

I remember some reviews saying yagami was a downer protagonist but I believe that completely ignores a running theme in the yakuza games. That, being unpunished murder changes you. Of all the yakuza protagonists. Yagami was the only one to believe he indirectly murder someone. Even Saijima, was facing jail time, so while it was in the back of his mind. That action, fully hit him when he was put of jail. Yagami meanwhile, spent years believing his actions got someone killed with him facing no consequences. As a result, he spent those years jating himself

I think my favorite part about the game is the pacing. No wasted scenes or characters. Everything coalesces beautifully into one perfectly packaged noir experience. RGG knew exactly what they wanted to do and executed it brilliantly. The progression of Yagami's character, the player's skill, and the intrigue of the plot all grow at nearly the same rate to keep you invested from beginning to end. And what's more? The sequel was even better.

I'll always remember the hype when you get the final boss down and he just goes "Nope, time for round 2."
  • @dalelumina3
i shed a tear when the mole said "it's molin time" and gouged out everyone's eyes. truly the final boss of all time 69/10 would recommend
  • Love this series & played both games. Kinda hope this spin-off detective series keeps going

FOR THE GREATER GOOD Please do the sequel. This and its sequel is 1000 times more accurate to law and court room drama than She-Hulk. Give these games more love Kamen. FOR THE GREATER GOOD.
  • @reapeashooter2
I think why its underrated was because it didn't have a PC release until a few days ago
  • @cryguy0000
Judgment is so underrated, one of my favorite Yakuza games. Flashy combat, an awesome story and wicked cast. It flew under the radar of a lot of Yakuza fans which is a shame because it's incredible.
  • @1for3Gaming
The way you described the combat system reminded me of something I love from metroidvania games, the movement tends to start fairly limited but you get more movement options as the game progresses and they'll feel free by the time you get to the late game.

WHAT A CLOSER. Great essay!! This game is a little ridiculous but VERY FUN, and the additional context for how it fits in with the rest of the series was great!
  • @ngchloe4877
Judgment is one of my favorite RGG games ever. It has a great story and it has one of the greatest side quest systems ever. Didn't care for the mini games or Keihin gang though
  • @icypika
The Greater Good! I loved your analysis so much! The story is amazing and the gameplay is a blast. Keep up the great work Mangakamen!
