I think he was attempting an "accidental" drowning at the beach. I think he was trying to work out ways to kill them at that point. These killings were long premeditated imo. The first death may be accidental but I believe since he knew he had to pay for that turn of events he took the "opportunity" of the situation, killed the others in a "buy one get 4 free" kind of way, since he was going to get in trouble for the first anyway. It was his opportunity to get rid of them in one fell swoop. The way he perceived it.
